Merino wool is the benchmark for snow-sport base layers. It regulates temperature across a wide range, warm when you are stationary on lifts and wicking when you are working hard, and resists odour far better than synthetics so it stays fresh over a multi-day trip. Synthetics dry faster and cost less, and suit high-output days. For most Australian and Japan conditions, merino is the more versatile choice.
Base layers come in weights measured in gsm. Lightweight at 150gsm suits spring riding and high-output days. Midweight at 200gsm is the most versatile all-round option and the one most riders should start with. Heavyweight at 260gsm and above is for genuinely cold days and riders who feel the cold.
