Merino vs synthetic

Merino wool is the benchmark for snow-sport base layers. It regulates temperature across a wide range — warm when you're stationary on lifts, wicking when you're working hard — and resists odour far better than synthetics, so it stays fresh over a multi-day trip. Synthetics dry faster and cost less, and suit high-output days where you're generating a lot of heat. For most Australian and Japan conditions, merino is the more versatile choice.

Choosing a weight

Base layers come in weights measured in gsm. Lightweight (150gsm) suits spring riding and high-output days. Midweight (200gsm) is the most versatile all-round option and the one most riders should start with. Heavyweight (260gsm+) is for genuinely cold days and riders who feel the cold.
