Fat tyre e-bikes have a split in the market that most people don't know about until after they've bought. There are road-legal EN15194 certified bikes and off-road unrestricted bikes with more power and higher top speeds. They look similar. They ride very differently. And in Victoria, using an unrestricted bike on public roads or shared paths is illegal.

Understanding which category you're buying in before you spend is the most important decision in this category.

EN15194 Certified — Road Legal E-Bikes

EN15194 is the European EPAC standard that Australian states recognise for legal road and path use. These bikes are configured with a 250W continuous-rated motor, pedal-assist only, and a maximum assisted speed of 25km/h.

On a certified e-bike you can legally ride on public roads, shared bike paths and bike lanes across Victoria. These bikes suit commuters, recreational riders and anyone who wants to replace short car trips. The 25km/h limit sounds conservative but in Melbourne traffic it's genuinely fast enough for most city riding.

Who this suits: Commuters. Recreational riders. Anyone wanting to ride legally on Melbourne's bike path network — the Capital City Trail, Bay Trail, Yarra Trail and connected routes.

Off-Road Unrestricted — High Performance Builds

Off-road unrestricted bikes have higher-output motors, higher top speeds, and configurable power modes that exceed EN15194 limits. These bikes are designed for private property, off-road trails and closed environments — not for public roads or shared paths in Victoria.

The performance difference is meaningful — more torque, higher top speed, more capable on hills and rough terrain. Fat tyres handle sand, gravel, grass and light trails that a standard path bike cannot touch.

Who this suits: Riders with private property access. Those wanting a recreation bike for beach and trail riding where legal. Riders prioritising performance over road compliance.

Motor and Battery — What the Specs Mean

Motor position

Rear hub motor: Most common on fat tyre e-bikes. Simple, reliable, low maintenance. Good for flat to moderate terrain.

Mid-drive motor: Motor positioned at the crank, using the bike's gears for torque multiplication. Significantly better on hills and rough terrain. Found on higher-end builds.

Motor wattage

Stated wattage is almost always peak output, not continuous. A 750W motor might deliver 250W continuously in EN-compliant mode, or full output in unrestricted mode. Don't compare bikes on stated wattage alone — ask what the continuous output is and what modes are available.

Battery capacity

Measured in Wh. More Wh means more range, but also more weight. Real-world range depends on rider weight, terrain, assist level and speed.

  • Under 500Wh: expect 30-50km real world on flat terrain at moderate assist
  • 500-750Wh: expect 50-80km real world
  • 750Wh and above: expect 80km+ under reasonable conditions

Samsung and LG cells are the quality benchmark for battery packs. Worth asking about the cell brand before buying on capacity figures alone.

Fat Tyres — Why They Matter

The wide tyre profile — typically 4 inches wide — is the defining characteristic of this category. Fat tyres deliver significantly better stability and traction on loose, wet or uneven surfaces. They absorb road vibration naturally without front suspension, and can run lower pressures for better grip on sand and soft ground.

The tradeoff is weight and slightly higher rolling resistance on smooth sealed roads. For Melbourne's mixed surfaces — sealed paths, gravel, grass, beach — fat tyres are the right call.

Service and Support — Why It Matters

An e-bike is a mechanical and electrical system. Things wear. Batteries degrade. Controllers need updating. Tyres puncture. Servicing one requires someone who understands both sides.

Frosty runs our in-house electric workshop at 435A Bridge Road, Richmond. We service and repair every brand we sell — no sending your bike interstate, no waiting for a brand to respond to a warranty claim. We carry parts, we know the products, and we back what we sell with real after-sales support.
