The difference between a great day on the mountain and a frustrating one often comes down to the small things — the right base layer, a neck warmer you actually packed, snowboard socks that don't compress and cut circulation, goggles that fit your helmet properly. Snow Essentials is where we pull together everything that makes the difference between a day that flows and a day spent fixing problems. All in stock at our Richmond showroom and shipping free Australia-wide from the same specialists who'll tell you what actually matters and what you can leave at home.

The Layering System — Getting It Right for Australian Conditions
Australian mountain weather is variable. A still, clear morning at Mt Buller can turn into wet, driving snow by 11am. A cold Falls Creek opening day can become a warm spring afternoon by early August. The right layering system lets you adapt to all of it without overpacking or leaving important gear in the car.
Base layer: The layer against your skin. Its job is to move moisture away from your body so you don't get cold and wet from the inside. Merino wool (Mons Royale) is the premium option — regulates temperature, resists odour, comfortable against skin. Synthetic technical fabric (polyester-based) dries faster and is lighter. Either works — the key point is that it's not cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it against your skin, which chills you and is one of the most common causes of a cold, miserable day on the mountain.
Mid layer: Traps warmth between your base and your shell. A merino hoody, fleece or lightweight insulated jacket. This is the layer you remove when warm and add back when cold or stationary on a chairlift. For most Australian resort riding, a mid layer weighing under 400g is enough.
Outer layer: Your waterproof jacket and pants. See our outerwear collection for the full range and buying advice.
The Two Things Riders Most Often Forget
Gloves and mitts: Hands are the first body part that becomes a problem on a cold chairlift. A good pair of gloves or mitts — waterproof outer, insulated liner — transforms how comfortable a cold day feels. Gloves give more dexterity; mitts are warmer in extreme cold. For most Australian resort days, waterproof insulated gloves are the right call. Mitts for genuinely cold or wet days. We carry gloves and mitts from Dakine, Howl and Rad — see our mitts and gloves collection.
Neck warmer: A merino neck warmer or balaclava costs almost nothing in luggage space and makes a significant difference when the wind picks up on an exposed run. The face and neck lose heat fast. Worth packing every trip regardless of forecast. Mons Royale merino neck warmers are the standard here.
Snowboard Socks — Not an Afterthought
A proper snowboard sock changes how your boot feels dramatically. Thick, cushioned, moisture-wicking, boot-height socks that don't compress, bunch or slip down during the day. Wearing regular socks in snowboard boots is one of the most common reasons for foot pain, blisters and cold feet on the mountain — the friction, compression and moisture management are completely different requirements from an everyday sock.
Stance snowboard socks are the benchmark. One pair per day — don't double up, which creates friction and pressure. Wash them properly between sessions and they'll last multiple seasons.
Goggles — What to Look for
The right goggle fits your helmet without a gap at the top (goggle gap lets cold air in and looks wrong). Lens tint should match the conditions you ride in most — low-light lenses (rose, amber, high-contrast) for flat-light and overcast Australian days, mid-range tints for variable conditions. Photochromic lenses that adjust automatically are the most versatile option. See our snow goggles collection for the full range with lens guide.
Snowboard Bags and Packs
A padded snowboard bag is essential for travel and worth owning even if you're only driving to Buller — a bag protects the topsheet, keeps edges from catching on car seats and makes loading and unloading significantly easier. See our snowboard bags collection.
Snow Essentials FAQ
What base layer is best for snowboarding? Merino wool (Mons Royale) for temperature regulation, odour resistance and comfort. Synthetic for fast-drying and lighter weight. Never cotton.
Do I really need snowboard-specific socks? Yes — the cushioning, height and moisture management are genuinely different from everyday socks. Stance is the standard. One pair per day, never double up.
What goggle tint is best for Australian conditions? Australian resort days are frequently overcast or flat-light — a high-contrast or low-light lens (rose, amber, yellow) works better than a dark lens in these conditions. Photochromic is the most versatile option if you ride in variable light.
What gloves should I buy? Waterproof insulated gloves for most Australian resort days. Mitts for cold or very wet conditions. Dakine and Howl are reliable at mid-price. Come in and try sizing — gloves should be snug enough to not bunch inside, with enough room to flex your fingers easily.
What are the most important things to pack for a day at Mt Buller? Base layer, mid layer, waterproof jacket and pants, helmet, goggles, gloves, neck warmer, snowboard socks, sunscreen. Read our full Mt Buller packing list.
