Why bibs over pants

The chest-and-back coverage means no snow up your back when you fall, no gap between jacket and pants, and more warmth across the core. They're the more protective, more watertight option — which is why they've become the default for powder and backcountry riders. The trade-off is they're slightly less convenient for quick bathroom stops and take a moment longer to get on.

Waterproofing

Same rule as all outerwear: 15K minimum for Australian conditions, 20K or GORE-TEX if you ride regularly in wet or variable snow. Bibs sitting in deep snow demand good waterproofing to earn their coverage advantage.

Fit

Bibs should allow full movement without pulling at the shoulders when you crouch. Most have adjustable straps to dial the fit and accommodate layers underneath. If you're layering a mid layer under the bib, factor that in — try them on the way you'll ride them.

Features that matter

Adjustable straps, a drop-seat or side zip for convenience, chest pockets (bibs give you extra secure storage up top), boot gaiters, and thigh vents for warm days. Some bibs have a relaxed/baggy cut favoured by park riders — a style call as much as a fit one.
