Are sale items lower quality?

No. Sale stock is new product discounted for being previous-season, end-of-line or overstock. A last-season board, boot or jacket performs the same as this year's, since the technology does not change dramatically year to year. For a lot of gear, buying last season on sale is the smartest value decision you can make.

Does buying on sale change how you should choose?

Not at all. The same rules apply — a board still needs the right shape and flex, a boot still needs to fit, a jacket still needs the right waterproof rating. Grab the deal, but grab the right item.
