Gloves or mitts: which should you get

The first decision is gloves versus mitts. Gloves give you dexterity, which matters if you're adjusting bindings, working zips or using your phone on the hill. Mitts keep your hands warmer, because your fingers share the same air space, making them the better choice for very cold days or anyone who runs cold. Lobster mitts split the difference, pairing fingers to keep warmth up without giving away all your dexterity. We carry all three.

What waterproofing actually means

Waterproofing in snow handwear is critical, and this is where cheap gloves fall down. Look for a Gore-Tex or similar insert in the liner, not just a treated outer shell. A treated outer sheds the first hour of snow and then wets out; an insert keeps water out all day. A waterproof outer with an insulated liner transforms how comfortable a cold, wet Australian day feels, and Australian snow is wet enough that this matters more here than it does in Japan.

How should snow gloves fit

Snug, with a little room at the fingertips. A glove that is too tight restricts circulation and makes your hands colder, not warmer, which is the opposite of what people expect. Too loose and you lose dexterity and trap cold air. Check the cuff as well: a long gauntlet cuff goes over your jacket sleeve and seals out snow on deep days, while a short cuff tucks under and is less bulky for resort riding.

Why your gloves get wet anyway

Most gloves that fail don't leak, they soak from the inside and never dry out. Dry them properly between days, away from direct heat, and pull the liner out if it's removable. Direct heat on a radiator or heater cooks the waterproof membrane and shortens the glove's life considerably. If you're riding consecutive days on a trip, a second pair is worth more than a more expensive single pair.
