What skateboard accessories do you actually need?

Beyond the deck, trucks, wheels and bearings, a few accessories make skating easier and keep your setup running:

• A skate tool — the one essential. An all-in-one tool handles your axle nuts, kingpin and mounting hardware, so you can adjust trucks and swap parts anywhere. If you buy nothing else, buy this.
• Spare hardware and bushings — bolts, nuts, washers and bushings wear out and get lost. Cheap to keep spares.
• Bearing cleaner and lube — clean, lubricated bearings roll better and last longer than a new cheap set.
• Skate wax — for waxing ledges, rails and kerbs so you can slide and grind them.
• Rails and guards — protect the underside of your deck and help boardslides.
