Fat boy from 12 Boards

I absolutely love the bike and use it nearly everyday.
I’m 67 years old but it’s a bit like going back to having dirt bikes in the mid seventies! Also 12 boards was easy to deal with. A great shop.

Adding another to my collection, best layer for 1st or 2nd layer.

Bent Metal Transfer Men's Snowboard Binding 2026 | Red

Seriously Underrated

These bindings are seriously Underrated, and Bent Metal are now gonna be my go-to bindings for the next few seasons.

I've been riding for 3 decades, and most recently have had Burton Vita's and Cartels, Now's, Joneses, Union Ultras, Nitro Phantoms and Team Pros, Rome Katanas and other stuff I have lost track of.

These Bent Metals have the response and support of a stiffer binding, the dampening to rival my Nitro Phantoms (with that fancy air injected foam and airbag in the heel) and yet are better straps and dampening WITH control, than my Union Ultras - which now, I will be selling.

And they also allow me to move around on board, for when I want to get surfy carvy.

They were not wrong when they said you get dampening AND underfoot feel - with most bindings, you lose one as you gain the other.

You also get the mini disc for microscopic, millimetre perfect stance adjustment.

The straps are super comfy and conform nicely around my boot, crating no pressure points, and the dampening allows my clapped out feet to ride for just that little bit longer, compared to the rest of my binding quiver.

For anyone thinking of these as an outlier potential options to your standard Union Forces or Rome Katanas or Burton Cartels - these are better in many, many ways.

Take the risk, and get yourself a pair!

Spark R&D Surge ST Splitboard Binding | Black | 2026

Big Lines. Maximum Drive. No Excuses.

The Spark R&D Surge ST is the binding trusted by professional big-line riders and mountain town legends when the terrain gets serious. It's Spark's stiffer, more supportive binding — built for riders who prefer maximum edge drive, confident lockdown, and a binding that keeps up when they're committing to no-fall zones, steep couloirs, and demanding alpine descents. The Surge ST gives you everything the platform has to offer in ST Tech touring efficiency, Tesla T1 transitions, and Rip 'N' Flip highback versatility — in a proven, durable package at a price that makes it the right call for most splitboarders who want high-level performance without paying for Pro-series weight savings they may never fully need. Made in Bozeman, Montana, USA — every binding component built in-house with the exception of a handful of screws and the buckles.

The Surge ST sits on a solid CNC-machined aluminium baseplate — no cutouts, maximum stiffness and durability. Side windows are partially filled for additional structural integrity without adding dead weight. The ST Whammy Bar climbing wire is built directly into the baseplate with positions at 12° and 18°, adjusted via a side-arm lever at the slope. Overmoulded plastic at the contact point between bar and baseplate makes position changes smooth and gloved-hand friendly even on steep, committing terrain. The ST Tech touring brackets overmould a proprietary thermoplastic blend over and through the aluminium base, forming bushings that last four times longer than the previous brass version — smoother in operation, more durable under repeated touring cycles, and self-lubricating in cold conditions. The Tesla T1 transition system — Spark's own slide-in, snap-ramp locking mechanism — requires no pins, no cables, and no tools. Slide the binding sideways into the offset bracket, snap the ramp, and you're locked in ride mode.

The Surge ST Asym Rip 'N' Flip Highback uses a high glass fibre fill ratio for a stiff, responsive ride with maximum energy transfer — individual left and right highbacks for natural ergonomics, with a flattened upper section for lateral mobility. The tool-free FLAD (Forward Lean Adjuster) toggles between a -13° touring position and up to +22° of forward lean in ride mode without tools or extra hardware. Pillow Line ankle straps are wide and asymmetric around the boot for all-around support and even pressure distribution — one-piece moulded construction, made entirely in-house, with standard-issue thermoplastic ladders and adjusters that perform reliably across the full temperature range from spring slush tours to sub-zero suffer fests. Integrated Ibex crampon mounting claws on the ST brackets accept Ibex ST Crampons for icy skin tracks — a tool-free snap on and off.

Why Ride the Spark R&D Surge ST?

✅ ST Tech Touring Brackets — Overmoulded thermoplastic over aluminium; self-lubricating; 4x more durable than brass bushings; smooth and efficient in any temperature
✅ ST Whammy Bar Climbing Wire — Built into the baseplate; 12° and 18° positions; side-arm lever for gloved position changes; overmoulded plastic contact point for smooth adjustment on steep terrain
✅ Solid CNC-Machined Aluminium Baseplate — Maximum stiffness and durability; no cutouts; partially filled side windows add structural strength where it counts
✅ Surge ST Asym Rip 'N' Flip Highbacks — High glass fibre fill for a stiff, maximum-response ride; individual L/R highbacks for natural ergonomics; flattened upper for lateral mobility; tool-free FLAD from -13° to +22°
✅ Wide Asymmetric Pillow Line Ankle Strap — Wide, asymmetric wrap around the boot for all-around support and even pressure distribution; waterproof one-piece moulded construction; made in-house
✅ Pillow Line Toe Strap — Designed as a toe cap for full-boot security, or fits as a traditional strap across the top of the boot
✅ Standard Thermoplastic Ladders and Adjusters — Made in-house; maintains flex over a wide temperature range from cold spring dawn patrols to sub-zero alpine missions
✅ Integrated Ibex Crampon Mounting Claws — Ibex ST crampons snap on and off the ST brackets without tools (crampons sold separately)

Binding Size Guide
Spark R&D uses unisex sizing based on boot length and bulk — not men's or women's specific. When in doubt, consider sizing up with bulkier or stiffer-soled boots.

Size US Men's Boot US Women's Boot EU Mondo
XS <7.0 <8.0 <39 <24.5
S 7.0 – 8.5 8.0 – 9.5 39 – 41 24.5 – 26.0
M 8.5 – 10.5 9.5 – 11.5 41 – 43 26.0 – 27.5
L 10.5+ 11.5+ 43+ 27.5+

Boot bulk matters as much as boot size with Spark sizing. A bulkier boot at US 10 may fit better in a Large than a Medium. If you're between sizes or unsure, call us on 03 9421 2293 and we'll help you work it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm new to splitboarding — what else do I need beyond these bindings?
The Surge ST comes with ST Brackets, T1 Heel Rests, mounting screws, and Spark's Pocket Tool. What's not included — and essential — is a set of pucks to mount the bindings to your splitboard in ride mode. Spark offers Flat Pucks (neutral stance) and Canted Pucks (angled for more natural ankle alignment and reduced knee fatigue on long tours); canted pucks are the more popular choice. Both sold separately. You'll also want Ibex ST Crampons for any serious skin track — they snap onto the integrated mounting claws on the ST brackets and are non-negotiable on firm or icy approaches. Your splitboard also needs split-specific inserts and interface hardware if it doesn't already have them. Call us on 03 9421 2293 and we can walk through exactly what you need for your specific setup.

How does the Tesla T1 system work — and how does transitioning from tour to ride mode work in practice?
The Tesla T1 is Spark's proprietary transition system. In tour mode, the binding slides sideways into the offset ST touring bracket and locks with the Tesla Snap Ramp. No pins to thread, no cables to pull, no tools required. To transition to ride mode: snap the ramp up, slide the binding out, rotate it 90°, slide it back into the puck channel, snap the ramp down. Most riders dial their transitions under two minutes once they've practised — and the system is designed to work reliably when snow-covered, cold, and covered in ice; the conditions where fiddly pin systems genuinely frustrate. The ST Tech overmoulding on the brackets and whammy bars makes every moving part smoother and more durable than any previous Spark system.

Surge ST vs Surge ST Pro — is the Pro worth the extra money?
Both bindings share the same baseplate geometry, T1 system, ST Tech brackets, and Rip 'N' Flip highback shape. The Pro upgrades every material that can be upgraded without changing the core design: carbon-reinforced nylon highbacks (stiffer, lighter) instead of glass-reinforced, full Pebax® straps, ladders, and adjusters (20% lighter, cold-stable) instead of standard thermoplastic, and 7075-T6 aluminium hardware throughout instead of stainless steel. The weight saving per pair in Medium is around 160g — real, but not dramatic. For riders doing long approaches where every gram accumulates over hours, or for those who want the absolute best cold-weather strap performance Pebax® provides, the Pro is worth it. For riders doing weekend half-day tours or those for whom budget matters more than last-gram optimisation, the standard Surge ST is an excellent binding that performs at the same fundamental level. Call us on 03 9421 2293 for an honest recommendation.

Surge ST vs Arc ST — which binding is right for me?
The Surge and Arc are Spark's two core splitboard binding families on the same T1 platform. The Surge is the stiffer, more supportive binding — solid baseplate, wider ankle straps, higher glass fibre content in the highback. It's built for riders who prioritise maximum edge drive and control in steep, consequential terrain, and suits bigger or more aggressive riders. The Arc is lighter with more baseplate cutouts and a smaller ankle strap with a flex window — it suits riders who favour agility, board feel, and a more surfy ride on longer tours and less technical descents. If you're charging steep lines and want the binding to drive hard through every turn, the Surge ST is your call. If you're prioritising tour efficiency and a more fluid, freestyle-friendly feel on the descent, the Arc ST is worth a look. Come into the store at 435A Bridge Rd Richmond or call 03 9421 2293 and we'll match you to the right setup.

About Spark R&D
Spark R&D was founded in 2006 in Bozeman, Montana — at the base of the Bridger Mountains, with a direct view of the terrain that informs every design decision they make. They manufacture and assemble every binding component in-house at their Bozeman shop, with the exception of a handful of screws and the buckles. That level of manufacturing control is rare in the binding industry — it means Spark's designs iterate with precision, and when they identify a problem, they fix it themselves. Twenty years of focused innovation on splitboard bindings, and nothing else, has made Spark the benchmark against which every other splitboard binding is measured.

About Snowboard Bindings — Buying Guide

Bindings are the most underestimated part of your snowboard setup. Most riders spend weeks choosing a board and minutes choosing bindings — but bindings are the complete communication layer between your body and your board. Every turn you initiate, every edge you engage, every carve and press travels from your boots through your bindings to the board. Get this right and you'll never think about them again. Get it wrong and it's all you'll think about all day.

At Twelve Board Store we stock bindings from Burton, Ride, K2, Nitro, Flux, Salomon, Jones, Rome, Bent Metal and Nidecker — covering traditional strap, Burton Step On® and Supermatic rear-entry systems across all price points and riding styles.

Sizing — every brand is different: Boot size drives binding size, but S/M/L/XL means something different across every brand. Burton Small runs US 3–6. Flux Small runs US 4–6. Nitro Small runs US 5–6. Never assume your size is the same brand to brand — check the sizing chart for each binding before you buy. When you're between sizes, go smaller. A snug binding fits better than a loose one every time.

Systems: Traditional strap bindings work with every boot and offer the widest range of options and price points. Burton Step On® requires specific compatible Burton boots — three contact points click in when you step on the board, no straps, completely different experience for resort riders doing laps. Supermatic rear-entry (Nidecker OG, Nidecker LT, Bent Metal Lightning) folds the highback down for faster entry without the boot compatibility requirement of Step On.

Setup matters: Once you have the right binding, set it up correctly. Boot centred toe-to-heel over the board edge. Toe strap centred across the widest part of your toe box — not on your toes. Ankle strap centred across the top of your ankle. Straps firm but not crushing. If you need to over-tighten to stop heel lift, the binding is too large.

Not sure which binding suits your setup? Call us on 03 9421 2293, visit us at 435A Bridge Road Richmond, or contact us online. We'll match you to the right binding for your boot, your board and how you ride.
