A waxed base is faster, smoother and safer than a dry one, and on wet, variable Australian snow the difference is bigger than most riders think. Wax fills the base structure, repels moisture and lets your board glide instead of dragging, especially in the slushy afternoon snow that is normal at Buller, Falls and Hotham.
Wax is matched to snow temperature, and getting roughly the right one makes a genuine difference to glide and control.
Warm or soft wax suits the wet, slushy snow that is normal in Australian spring and through most afternoons.
Cold or hard wax suits firm, dry, early-morning snow.
All-temperature wax is the simplest option and a sound default for most Australian riders who would rather not match conditions every time.
If you are only buying one, buy all-temperature. It is a compromise, but a small one next to riding on a dry base.
Hot wax or rub-on?
Hot wax is ironed in and then scraped back, so it penetrates the base structure properly and lasts far longer. It is the real job and it is worth learning to do yourself.
Rub-on wax is a quick mid-trip top-up and it wears off fast. Useful to have in the bag, not a substitute for the real thing.
How often should you wax your board?
Every five or six riding days is a reasonable guide, but the base tells you more than a calendar does. If it looks chalky and white, particularly along the edges, it is dry and it is costing you speed and control.
Wet Australian snow drags on a dry base far more than dry powder does, so the interval here is shorter than advice written for North America or Japan.
Would you rather we did it?
Our Richmond workshop handles hot waxing and full tunes. If you would rather ride than scrape, drop the board in and we will take care of it.

Burton step on bindings
These were great to use. Forget about ratchets and spend more time going down hill rather than down on your bum tightening your bindings.
