Waterproofing

Pants are in constant contact with the snow, so if anything they warrant equal or better waterproofing than your jacket. 15K minimum for Australian conditions, 20K or GORE-TEX if you ride hard or sit and kneel a lot (park riders, beginners, anyone learning). Wet, cold legs end a day fast.

Shell vs insulated

As with jackets, shell pants give you more control — pair them with base-layer leggings and add warmth only when you need it. Insulated pants are warmer on cold mornings but can be too much by a warm spring afternoon. Shells are the more adaptable choice for Australia.

Fit and rise

Pants should sit comfortably at the hip with room to move — you're constantly bending and crouching on a board. Check the rise: too low and they gap at the back when you're strapped in. Try them on with your base layer.

Features that matter

Boot gaiters (internal cuffs that seal over your boots and keep snow out). Side vents / thigh zips to dump heat. Reinforced ankle and hem where boot edges cause wear. Belt loops or an adjustable waist for a secure fit over layers. A connection point to zip to your jacket's powder skirt if you want a fully sealed system.

Pants vs bibs

Pants sit at the waist and are quicker to get on and off — the familiar choice. Bibs extend coverage up the torso and seal out snow entirely, warmer and more watertight but less convenient. If you ride powder or spend time on the ground, consider bibs.
