What counts as snowboard clothing versus outerwear?

A useful distinction when you are kitting out. Outerwear is your shell — the waterproof jacket and pants that block wind and snow. Snowboard clothing is everything else: the base layers and mid-layers that go underneath, plus the hoodies, tees and lifestyle pieces you wear off the hill. Outerwear keeps the weather out; clothing keeps you warm and comfortable underneath and dressed after.

How should you think about layering?

Three layers, kept simple: a base layer against the skin to wick moisture, a mid-layer such as a fleece or hoodie to trap warmth, and your shell on top. Get the layers under the shell right and you stay warm and dry; get them wrong — cotton against the skin, or one big jacket instead of adjustable layers — and you end up cold and damp.

Why avoid cotton against the skin?

Because it holds moisture. Cotton soaks up sweat and stays wet, which chills you fast once you stop moving. For anything worn while riding, choose merino or synthetic, which wick and keep warming when damp. Cotton is fine for the lodge and the drive, just not as a base layer under your shell.

Do these pieces work off the mountain?

Many are designed to. Snow-brand hoodies, tees and lifestyle layers are built to live in the culture, so they wear as well in the city as on a mountain morning. That crossover is part of the appeal — you get far more days out of them than a pure technical piece.

How should the layers fit?

Base and mid-layers should be snug enough to work — a loose base layer does not wick well, and a bulky mid-layer bunches under your shell. Lifestyle pieces are a preference call. If you are buying to layer under a specific jacket, factor that in and do not size everything up.
