How to Read Waterproof Ratings

Waterproofing is measured in millimetres of water column — how much pressure a fabric withstands before moisture seeps through. For Australian riding the number matters more than in dry alpine environments, because wet snow saturates gear faster than light dry powder.

• 10,000mm (10K) — handles dry days and light snowfall. Fine for bluebird groomers. Will wet out in sustained wet snow or heavy rain.
• 15,000–20,000mm (15K–20K) — the sweet spot for Australian conditions. Handles wet, heavy snow all day. What most serious riders should be buying.
• 20,000mm+ (20K+) — storm day and backcountry territory. GORE-TEX and equivalent membranes live here.

Breathability is the other number — higher means sweat vapour escapes faster, keeping your base layer dry. Riding hard in warm spring conditions or hiking into the backcountry demands more breathability than lift-served groomer days.

GORE-TEX — Why It's Worth the Price

GORE-TEX is a waterproof-breathable membrane bonded to the outer fabric. Billions of microscopic pores let vapour out and block water coming in. Unlike DWR coatings that wear off, GORE-TEX membranes hold performance across the life of the garment when cared for. For the wet, slushy snow of mid-season it's the right investment for anyone riding regularly. Fit and Features

Fit: jackets should cover your lower back when you're bent forward with arms raised — try on with layers. Hood: must fit over a helmet. Powder skirt: seals against slush and powder when you fall. Pit zips: dump heat fast on warm spring days. Pockets: chest for phone and pass, inner for goggles.

Layering for Australian Conditions

Base layer (merino or synthetic, never cotton) against the skin; mid layer (fleece or light puffer) for warmth you can add or remove; shell on top for wind and waterproofing. Pants work on two layers — base-layer leggings and shell pants. Insulated pants are warmer but limit your ability to adapt across the day.
