Waterproofing rating is where to start. 10,000mm is the minimum we'd recommend for regular Australian riding — it handles the typical mix of groomed runs, chair rides and the occasional sit-down in the slush. 15,000mm–20,000mm is where you want to be if you're riding through variable conditions, sitting in the snow working on tricks, or doing full days in rain. Premium membranes like Gore-Tex sit at the top of the scale for maximum protection.

Breathability matters as much as waterproofing. On a warm Australian spring day, a jacket that doesn't breathe turns into a sauna. Look for the breathability rating alongside the waterproofing number — they work together. High-output riders need high breathability. Lift-and-cruise riders can get away with less.
