What does Australian winter actually demand from outerwear?

More than most people expect. Australian mountain conditions are wet and variable in a way that dry continental snow is not: icy first thing, slushy by midday, and often raining somewhere in between. Gear specced for dry Colorado powder wets out here.

What fit should you go for?

This is where men's outerwear decisions actually get made, and it comes down to riding style rather than fashion.

A relaxed, baggier cut gives freedom of movement, layers easily, and looks right off the hill as well as on it. It is also more forgiving if you are between sizes. A technical fitted shell suits high-output riders who layer deliberately and do not want fabric flapping at speed or snagging on a pack.

Whichever way you go, size it around the layers you will actually wear underneath. A jacket that fits perfectly over a t-shirt in the shop will be tight over a mid-layer in August.

Which brand suits which rider?

Do your jacket and pants need to match?

There is no requirement to match, and most riders do not. What does matter is that the two work together. The pant should connect to the jacket's powder skirt if you want a sealed system, and the waterproof ratings should be in the same ballpark. A 20K jacket over 10K pants means you get wet from the waist down while your top half stays perfect.
