What is Lumalens

Lumalens is Dragon's lens technology and it is the main reason to buy the brand. Rather than just tinting the lens darker, it filters specific parts of the light spectrum to lift contrast and colour definition. The practical result is that bumps, ruts and texture read more clearly in flat light instead of the slope turning into a featureless white sheet. If you have ever ridden through cloud and lost all sense of where the ground is, that is the problem Lumalens is built to solve. You will see it abbreviated to LL in model names, followed by the tint.

Which Dragon goggle should you get

• X1 and X1S — the workhorse frame. Wide field of view, spherical lens, suits medium to large faces. The X1S is the smaller-fit version of the same design.
• X2 and X2S — the flagship, with the largest field of view in the range and a quick-change lens system. The pick if you want the best optics Dragon makes.
• NFX2 and NFXS — frameless design with a distinctive look and excellent peripheral vision. The NFXS is the smaller fit.
• NFX MAG — magnetic lens change. Pull one lens off, drop the next one on, no fiddling with cold hands on a chairlift.

Do you wear glasses

Look for OTG in the name, which stands for Over The Glasses. Dragon's OTG models like the DX3 Plus have deeper frame cut-outs at the temples so your glasses arms sit inside the goggle without pressing into the side of your head. Riding in normal goggles over prescription glasses generally means pressure headaches and fogging, so this matters more than people expect. Why lens changing matters in Australia

An Australian riding day routinely runs bright sun to full cloud and back again, sometimes inside an hour. A dark lens that was perfect at 10am leaves you riding blind at 2pm when the cloud drops in. Two options solve this. A quick-change or magnetic system lets you swap to a low-light lens in under a minute on the chairlift. A photochromic or transition lens does it automatically by darkening and lightening with the conditions, which costs more but means one lens covers the whole day. For most riders here we would push you toward the transition lens, because the spare you left in the car is no use on the mountain.

Getting the fit right

Goggle fit comes down to face size and nose bridge shape, and it is the thing most people get wrong online. The goggle should sit flat against your face with no gap across the bridge of your nose, because that gap is where cold air and snow get in. Dragon runs both standard and small-fit versions of most frames, which is why the S models exist. Your goggle also has to pair with your helmet with no gap across the forehead.
