Why Board Size Matters for Kids
Kids skateboards are sized smaller than adult boards because a narrower deck is easier to control with smaller feet. The wrong size board is one of the most common reasons kids struggle to progress — they're fighting equipment that doesn't suit them rather than learning to skate.
Deck width is the key measurement. As a guide:
-
Mini (6.5"–7.0") — ages 5–7, shoe size under 3. The smallest complete setups for very young riders.
-
7.0"–7.5" — ages 7–10, shoe size 3–5. The most common kids size range. Proportioned correctly for kids who are genuinely learning to skate.
-
7.5"–7.75" — ages 10–13, shoe size 5–7. Transitional size — works for older kids and small adults.
-
7.75"+ — adult sizing. Most kids aged 12 and above are ready for a standard adult setup.
These are guides, not rules. A bigger kid skates a bigger board; a smaller, more technical kid sometimes prefers narrower. Come in and we'll match the right size in a few minutes.
Quality Kids Completes vs Cheap Alternatives
A department store skateboard looks like a skateboard but doesn't ride like one. The deck is heavier and doesn't pop. The trucks are imprecise and wobble unpredictably. The wheels are hard plastic that slide without warning on smooth surfaces. Kids who start on cheap boards often decide they don't like skating — when the real issue is they've never ridden a board that actually works.
A quality kids complete from a real skate brand costs more but rides properly. The trucks turn smoothly, the wheels roll cleanly, the deck has real pop. A kid on a proper board learns faster, enjoys it more and doesn't outgrow it in two sessions. Buy once, buy right applies to kids gear as much as adults.

Safety Gear for Kids
Helmet is non-negotiable for kids learning to skate. Wrist guards are the second most important item — the most common skating injury for beginners is wrist fractures from catching a fall. Knee pads add confidence for kids learning to drop in or skate transition. See our skateboard helmets and protection collection.
Kids Skateboard FAQ
What size skateboard for a 7-year-old? Typically 7.0"–7.25" depending on shoe size. Shoe size is the best guide — size 3 shoe suits a 7.0" deck, size 4–5 suits 7.25"–7.5". Come in and we'll size them up properly.
What age can kids start skating? Most kids have the balance and coordination for a skateboard from around age 5. Mini boards and smaller setups make it more manageable for younger kids.
Do kids need a special skateboard or can they use an adult one? A standard adult board (7.75"+) is too wide for most kids under 10. The right kids size makes learning significantly easier.
What safety gear does my kid need? Helmet as minimum — mandatory. Wrist guards are the second most important item. Knee pads for kids learning tricks or transition. We stock all of it in kids sizes.
Are cheap skateboards from toy shops okay for kids? No — they ride poorly, break quickly and make learning harder. A quality kids complete from a real brand is worth the difference.
