Can I use my normal snowboard boots on a splitboard?

Yes. Splitboard bindings take standard soft snowboard boots, so you do not need dedicated footwear to start. The binding is what changes, not the boot. A stiffer boot gives better support on long climbs, but your existing boots will get you going.

Will my regular snowboard bindings fit a splitboard?

No. Splitboard bindings mount to pucks that sit in the board's channel inserts, and they need a touring mode that rotates for a walking stride plus a riding mode locked to your normal stance. Regular bindings do neither. We check compatibility on every setup we sell.

How do I pick between mohair, nylon and mixed skins?

Mohair is lighter and glides better, so it suits long approaches. Nylon grips harder, which matters on icy skin tracks. A mohair and nylon mix is the most versatile for Australian terrain, where you often get both in the same day.

Should my splitboard be softer or stiffer than my resort board?

Not softer. Avoid a very soft flex, because you need to hold an edge on firm Australian morning snow on the descent. Directional shapes with a longer nose and setback stance are the backcountry standard, since you are riding variable snow in one direction.

Which Jones splitboard suits a first setup?

Is it safe to tour if only one person carries avalanche gear?

No. Every person in the group needs a beacon, probe and shovel, with no exceptions. The person who is not buried is the only rescuer available, so everyone has to be equipped and trained to run a rescue independently. AST 1 is the minimum qualification for independent backcountry travel.

Where can you actually splitboard in Australia?

The Bogong High Plains in Victoria and the Main Range in New South Wales are the main zones, offering wide bowls, ridge lines, couloirs and tree runs outside resort boundaries. When the snowpack is solid the terrain is genuinely underrated.
