What makes a snowboard freestyle?

Freestyle boards are typically true twins, meaning a symmetrical nose and tail so they ride switch as naturally as they ride forward. Add a softer to medium flex and a profile that balances pop with forgiveness, often a camber-rocker hybrid, and you get a board you can spin, press and land switch on without fighting it.

That forgiveness is the point. A freestyle board is designed to let you get things slightly wrong and still ride away.

Freestyle or freeride, which do you need?

Freestyle boards are about tricks, park laps and playfulness. Twin-shaped, softer, easy to throw around. Freeride boards are directional and stiffer, built for carving, steeps and powder at speed.

If most of your riding is park, side hits and general all-mountain fun, freestyle is your category. If you are chasing powder and charging steep terrain, look at our powder shapes instead. Plenty of riders end up owning one of each, and there is nothing wrong with that.

What size freestyle board should you ride?

Freestyle boards are often ridden slightly shorter than an all-mountain board, roughly chin to nose height as a starting point, which makes spins easier to initiate and the board quicker between tricks. Weight and ability matter as much as height though, so treat that as a starting point rather than a rule.

Are freestyle boards good for beginners?

Yes, and they are often the best first board. The softer flex is more forgiving of mistakes, the twin shape means riding switch feels natural from the start rather than being something you have to unlearn later, and the board is easier to turn at low speed.

The one caveat is that a very soft board gets unstable at speed, so if you already know you want to ride fast on groomers, look at a medium flex all-mountain twin rather than the softest option on the wall.
