Melbourne is a genuinely good city for commuting by fat tyre electric bike. Good path infrastructure, relatively flat terrain across most of the inner and middle suburbs, and a network of trails that connect most of the city to the bay, the rivers and the surrounding suburbs. We are at 435A Bridge Rd, Richmond, which puts us right in the middle of it.
Is Your Route Bikeable?
Most inner and middle Melbourne commutes are bikeable — often more easily than people assume. The Capital City Trail provides a largely off-road path through much of the inner suburbs. The Yarra Trail, Bay Trail and Maribyrnong Trail connect major suburbs with the city. On-road bike lanes have expanded significantly across Melbourne over the last decade.
If you are not sure whether your specific commute has a practical bike route, use Google Maps in cycling mode. You will often find a route that is safer and more pleasant than the direct road option.
The EN15194 Question — Confirm Before You Ride
Every fat tyre electric bike you ride on Melbourne's shared paths and roads must be EN15194 certified. All Fatboy, Super73 EN15194 variants and road-legal Ampd Brothers bikes meet this standard. FlightRisk and unrestricted configurations are not legal on public paths. Confirm the specific model's certification before purchasing if buying specifically to commute on Melbourne's path network.
Key Melbourne Routes From Richmond
Capital City Trail: 28km loop around the inner city. Sealed, well-lit, connects Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond and the CBD. Most practical route for riders commuting from the inner north and east into the city.
Yarra Trail: follows the river from the city out toward Warrandyte. Connects Richmond, Hawthorn, Kew, Fairfield and beyond. Mostly off-road and flat. Excellent for riders in the eastern suburbs.
Bay Trail: coastal path from St Kilda toward Mornington Peninsula. Good for riders in the south and bayside suburbs.
Maribyrnong River Trail: inner-west connection through Footscray, Flemington and Essendon. Good alternative for western suburbs riders who would otherwise be on busy roads.
Practical Commuting Considerations
Locking your bike
A quality D-lock through the frame and rear wheel, attached to a fixed object, is the minimum. For longer work-day parking, a secondary cable through both wheels adds meaningful deterrence. The bigger and more visual the lock, the better — opportunistic theft goes for easy targets.
Charging at work
Most Melbourne commutes sit well within the range of a single charge. If your commute is at the longer end or you are a heavier rider, charging at work effectively doubles your range. A removable battery makes this practical without needing a power point near your bike parking. Fatboy and Ampd Brothers both offer removable batteries on their main models.
Wet weather
Fat tyre electric bikes are significantly more capable in wet conditions than standard bikes. The wider contact patch provides more grip on wet surfaces, tram tracks and slippery path transitions. Ride conservatively on very wet days — braking distances are longer — but the bikes handle rain without any issues. Motors and electronics are sealed for normal riding conditions.
What to carry
A basic puncture kit is worth having. Fat tyre punctures are less common due to the volume of air in the tyre, but they do happen. A pump, spare tube and tyre levers is all you need for roadside repair. We stock all of this in store.
Helmet
Legally required in Victoria. Non-negotiable.
What to Expect in the First Month
Most people underestimate how much they will enjoy a fat tyre electric bike commute. The motor removes the effort. The fat tyres remove the anxiety about rough surfaces. The commute that used to feel like a logistical challenge becomes something most people look forward to.
The first few weeks are also when new bikes typically need small adjustments — brakes bedding in, minor cable stretch, setup refinements. That is exactly what our 6 months of free adjustments covers. Come in if anything feels off.
