Fat Tyre Electric Bike Tyre Pressure Guide — Get This Right

Tyre pressure is the single most commonly neglected maintenance item on fat tyre electric bikes. It is also the easiest to get right and the one that makes the most immediate difference to how the bike rides, how far it goes on a charge, and how safe it is in varying conditions.


Why Fat Tyre Pressure Is Different

Fat tyres run at much lower pressures than standard bike tyres. A road bike might run at 80 to 120 PSI. A fat tyre electric bike runs at 8 to 25 PSI depending on the tyre, the rider weight and the terrain. First-time fat tyre riders often assume the tyres are under-inflated. They are not — the low pressure is the point.

The large volume of air at low pressure is what creates the cushioning effect. Run too hard and you lose this benefit. Run too soft and rolling resistance increases, range drops and the risk of pinch flats rises.


What Pressure to Run

The correct pressure depends on body weight, terrain and the specific tyre. Your bike manual gives the recommended range. Use that as your starting point.

Sealed path commuting: run toward the higher end of the recommended range. Less rolling resistance, better battery efficiency.
Mixed terrain, gravel and beach access: drop to the middle or lower end. More contact patch, better grip on loose and variable surfaces, more cushioning on rough paths.
Very rough off-road terrain: lower pressure still, within the tyre's minimum safe range. Maximum traction and cushioning.


Rider Weight and Pressure

Heavier riders need slightly more pressure for the same terrain. A 65kg rider and a 95kg rider on the same bike will get the best results at different pressures. If you are 90kg or more, start toward the middle of the recommended range rather than the bottom.


How Often to Check

Monthly is the minimum. Fat tyres lose pressure gradually — a tyre correct a month ago may be noticeably soft today. Also check after any impact that felt harder than usual.


What You Need

A floor pump with a pressure gauge that reads in PSI and a valve fitting compatible with your bike. Check whether your bike uses Schrader or Presta valves before buying a pump. We stock both types in store.


Signs Your Pressure Is Wrong

Too low: the bike feels sluggish and heavy. Range shorter than usual. Tyre visibly squashes flat when you sit on it. Tyre bottoms out on rough ground.
Too high: ride is harsh and jarring. Bike skips over rough surfaces rather than rolling through them. Traction on gravel or wet surfaces feels reduced.
