How to Charge Your Electric Bike Battery Properly

Charging an electric bike battery correctly is the single most impactful thing you can do to protect your investment long-term. The battery is the most expensive component and the one most affected by how you treat it. Good habits from the start add years to battery life. Bad habits accelerate degradation in ways that are permanent and costly.


Use the Supplied Charger

The charger that came with your bike has been specified for that battery system. It delivers the right voltage, the right charge rate and the right cut-off behaviour for the cells and the BMS in your specific pack. A generic charger can cause under or overcharging at the cell level, reducing capacity and — at the extreme end — creating safety issues. Every electric bike we sell comes with the correct manufacturer-specified charger. If you need a replacement, buy one through us or directly through the brand.


The Charging Habits That Protect Battery Life

Avoid running to zero regularly. Try to charge before you drop below 20%.

Avoid leaving at 100% for extended periods. If not riding for a few days, it is fine to leave it charged. If not riding for weeks, charge to around 60% and leave it there.

Unplug when it is full. Charge and unplug rather than leaving on the charger indefinitely.

Charge at room temperature. 15 to 25 degrees is ideal. Charging in a hot environment is harder on cells. Never charge below zero — permanent cell damage. In Melbourne conditions this is rarely an issue outdoors, but in an unheated shed on a winter morning, let the battery come to room temperature first.

Let the battery cool after a hard ride before charging. A 20 to 30 minute cool-down before charging is a good habit for riders who do hard sessions.

If the bike is sitting unused for more than a few weeks, store the battery at 40 to 60% charge. Check every 4 to 6 weeks during storage and top up to around 50% if it has drifted lower. Lithium batteries self-discharge slowly and a battery that drops too low can lock itself permanently.
