Layering is the skill that separates riders who are comfortable all day from riders who are cold by noon or sweating through their base layer by 10am. Getting it right for an overseas trip matters more than it does at home — the conditions are more extreme, the consequences of being wet or cold are more serious, and you cannot easily duck back to your car for a change of kit.
This guide covers how to layer specifically for the conditions you encounter in Japan, Canada and the Alps, and what each layer needs to do.
The System — Three Layers, One Job Each
The principle is straightforward: each layer does a specific job and the system works because the layers work together. Combine them correctly and you can ride comfortably across a range of temperatures and activity levels by adjusting what you are wearing.
Base layer: manages moisture. Pulls sweat away from your skin and moves it toward the next layer. Never cotton — cotton absorbs moisture and holds it against your skin, which in cold conditions leads to rapid heat loss. Merino wool is the benchmark. It manages moisture, does not hold odour through a week of hard riding, and provides meaningful warmth even when damp. Synthetic technical fabrics work too and dry faster than merino — useful if you are hand-washing kit on a long trip.
Mid layer: provides insulation. Traps warm air close to your body. A fleece, a lightweight synthetic puffer, or a merino mid-layer all work depending on the temperature and your activity level. The key is that it needs to pack small enough to carry when you do not need it — mid-layer management through the day (putting it on for lifts, removing it for active riding) is a skill that makes a huge difference in comfort.
Outer layer (shell): blocks wind and water. A properly waterproof and breathable shell is the non-negotiable piece for overseas riding. It does not need to provide warmth itself — that is the mid-layer's job. What it must do is keep external moisture out while allowing the moisture your body generates to escape outward. This is where GORE-TEX earns its price premium.
What Changes Overseas vs Australia
The layering principle is the same everywhere. What changes is the intensity of what each layer needs to do.
At Buller in August, a mid-range waterproof jacket over a midlayer over a merino base handles most conditions. Temperatures are manageable, snow conditions are variable but rarely extreme, and the worst weather is wet and cold rather than genuinely dangerous.
In Hokkaido in January, the same base principle applies but every layer needs to work harder. The base layer is managing moisture against skin in -20°C air — it needs to keep you dry more effectively. The mid layer is insulating against temperatures that are genuinely serious — a lightweight fleece is adequate on mild days, a proper synthetic puffer is necessary on cold mornings and after storms. The shell needs to handle sustained powder immersion — if you are riding deep snow all day, your jacket is in the snow constantly. The waterproofing and breathability demands are real.
Layering for Japan
Japan is the most demanding layering environment most Australian riders encounter on their first overseas trip. Hokkaido specifically delivers sustained cold that Australian riders underestimate until they are in it.
Base layer for Japan
Mid-weight merino is the standard. Light merino is fine for warmer resort days and days where you are very active. On storm days — cold, sustained snowfall, wind — a heavier merino base or a merino bottom with a synthetic over-layer handles the cold more effectively. Mid layer for Japan
This is where most riders underpack. A lightweight fleece is what many people bring and it is sometimes adequate. For Hokkaido storm days, cold lift rides, and any day where the temperature is below -15°C, a proper synthetic insulated jacket — something with 60-100 grams of insulation — makes a significant difference. The mid-layer goes on for lifts, comes off when you are riding hard, and goes back on when you stop.

Outer layer for Japan
GORE-TEX shell or nothing. Japan powder days put your shell in snow repeatedly across a full day of riding. A standard waterproof jacket with 10,000-15,000mm waterproofing delaminates with this kind of sustained exposure over several trips. GORE-TEX maintains its performance across thousands of wash and wear cycles and holds up to sustained powder immersion in a way that proprietary waterproof fabrics simply do not.

Layering for Canada
Canada covers a wide temperature range depending on where you are riding and when. Whistler in December can be mild and wet — closer to a heavy Victorian winter day than a Hokkaido storm. Revelstoke in February can be genuinely cold with light interior powder.
The safe approach for Canadian winter: pack for the colder end of the range your specific destination can deliver. In the BC interior, pack Japan-level layering. At Whistler in late season, the base Japan system with flexibility to remove the mid-layer on warm spring days covers the range.
The one Canadian-specific consideration is moisture management in the coastal ranges. Whistler gets wetter, heavier snow than Hokkaido. A 3-layer GORE-TEX shell is more important in sustained wet coastal conditions than it is in the dry cold of northern Japan. The breathability performance of 3L versus 2L is more noticeable in these conditions.
Layering for Europe
Europe varies more than either Japan or Canada across a typical trip. Warm bluebird days at high altitude, cold storm days below treeline, spring slush on south-facing slopes — sometimes all in the same week. The layering system needs to be flexible rather than optimised for one specific condition set.
The same three-layer principle applies. The practical difference is that European resort days often involve more lift riding across exposed ridgelines than Japanese tree riding — wind protection on the shell becomes more important. A properly helmet-compatible hood that cinches down against wind is a meaningful detail for European riding that matters less in sheltered Japanese tree runs.
Austrian Tyrol winters — particularly if you are based in Innsbruck riding multiple resorts — can be cold and variable. Pack mid-weight merino, a proper insulated mid, and a GORE-TEX shell. You will use all of it across a week.
What Not to Bring
Cotton. In any form. Cotton as a base layer or mid-layer in serious cold is the fastest way to become cold, wet and miserable. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it — when you stop moving and the sweat-soaked cotton sits against your skin in cold air, your core temperature drops quickly. This is the single most common layering mistake we see in first-time overseas riders. Leave the cotton at home entirely.
A single heavy insulated jacket as your only outer layer. The insulated jacket approach — big puffy jacket, no layering system — traps moisture from sweating, overheats you when you are active, and freezes when you stop. The shell-plus-mid system works better in every condition that serious snowboarding delivers.
