Thredbo is Australia's best resort for snowboarding. That's a position that gets argued — Perisher has more terrain in raw acreage, Falls Creek has a strong loyal following — but in terms of vertical drop, run quality, lift infrastructure and the sheer sense of riding a proper mountain, Thredbo wins. Australia's highest lift-accessible point at 2,037m, 480 hectares of terrain, the Kosciuszko chairlift giving access to the highest skiable terrain in Australia. When Australian snowboarders talk about a proper resort experience, Thredbo is usually what they mean.
Getting there
Thredbo is in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, approximately 500km from Sydney (5.5 hours) and 420km from Canberra (4 hours). From Melbourne it's about 6 hours via the Hume Highway — doable as a weekend trip but more comfortable as a 3-5 night stay. Flying into Canberra and hiring a car is a solid option for interstate visitors, particularly from Melbourne and Adelaide.
The Thredbo village is in a valley at 1,365m. On-mountain accommodation fills quickly for peak season — book well ahead for July and school holidays.
Terrain overview
Thredbo's terrain is divided between the Cruiser area (lower mountain, groomed intermediate runs) and the Snowgum area (upper mountain, steeper and more variable). The headline runs are at the top: Funnel Web and the Summit runs accessed from the Kosciuszko chairlift are genuinely steep and hold powder well after a snowfall. The lower mountain has good intermediate terrain across multiple runs and a well-regarded beginner area at the base.
For advanced riders, the terrain around the top of the Kosciuszko chairlift is the draw. Dead Horse Gap — accessible via a traverse from the top of the mountain — is the gateway to some of the best backcountry terrain in Australia. Riders with AST training and the right safety gear can access chutes, bowls and off-piste terrain that rivals small-scale alpine zones anywhere in the southern hemisphere.
The terrain park on Thursday Plantation is one of Australia's better maintained parks — multiple features across three lines, progressively built from beginner jumps to larger table tops and rails.
When to go
Thredbo's elevation gives it better and more consistent snow than Victorian resorts in most years. July is reliably excellent. August is typically peak quality — snowpack is deepest and grooming is at its best. September stays good and spring conditions in late September can be some of the best riding of the year — soft afternoon snow, long days and thin crowds once the school holiday crowds have left.

Lift passes
Thredbo offers day passes, multi-day passes and season passes. The Ikon Pass includes Thredbo — for riders planning multiple visits to NSW and Victorian resorts, the Ikon Pass is often the best value option. Thredbo also offers multi-day packages that combine lift passes with accommodation.
Gear recommendations for Thredbo
Thredbo's higher elevation means colder temperatures and better quality snow than Victorian resorts in most conditions. A proper waterproof outerwear setup matters more here than at lower resorts — the wind above treeline on the upper mountain can be significant. Base layer, midlayer, waterproof jacket and pants with sealed seams are the standard setup.
For boards, Thredbo's run quality rewards directional and freeride boards — there's enough vertical and run length to justify a dedicated board rather than a versatile all-mountain twin. The groomed runs on the upper mountain are long enough to make a proper carving board worthwhile. If you're accessing backcountry terrain via Dead Horse Gap, the right safety gear — beacon, probe, shovel — is not optional.
