Carver Surfskates have been the benchmark of the surf skating category since they invented it in 1996. Three decades later, with dozens of competitors in the market, Carver is still the board that serious surf skaters reference everything else against. Here is why — and how to buy one in Australia without getting burned by grey market stock or limited range.
Why Carver Is Still the Best
Carver did not just make the first surf skate truck — they spent thirty years refining it. The C7 system that launched the category in 1996 has been through multiple iterations, each one improving the bearing quality, the spring geometry and the pivot feel. The CX — Carver's springless system — was developed to address a specific complaint about the C7 (too loose, too reactive for surfers used to a tighter board feel) and became the more popular system precisely because it solved that problem.
What Carver does better than the competition is consistency. The feel of a Carver CX or C7 complete is predictable across every deck shape and size in the range. The truck geometry, the wheel durometer, the deck concave — all of it is developed together to produce a specific riding experience. Competitor brands copy the truck technology but rarely get the whole system right. On a Carver, the board does what the brand says it will do.
The deck shapes matter too. Carver shapes their decks like surfboards — pintails, rounded pins, fish shapes, hybrids — with concave profiles and kicktail geometries that mirror the boards their riders use in the water. Riding a Carver does not feel like riding a skateboard that has been given a surf truck. It feels like riding a surfboard that happens to be on wheels.
Carver CX vs C7 — The Short Version
CX: springless reverse kingpin front truck. Tight, fluid carve. More intuitive for beginners and most surfers. The board you want if you are new to surf skating or if you want the surfiest feel in a controlled, connected way. Suits most riders most of the time.
C7: spring-loaded front truck with a wide pivot range. Loose, powerful, generates more speed from the pump. The board you want if you have ridden the CX and want more range of motion, or if you are specifically training the pivot-driven movements of a high-performance surfboard. Takes more time to master but rewards the investment.
Not sure which one? Start with the CX. Ride it for a season. If you outgrow it, the C7 will make immediate sense. If you go straight to the C7 without the CX foundation, the learning curve is significantly steeper.
The Carver Range — What We Stock
We carry the full Carver catalogue at Twelve Board Store — completes across both truck systems in every shape and size, individual CX and C7 trucks for riders building custom setups or upgrading existing decks, Carver wheels, bearings and hardware.
Key shapes in the current range:
Carver Kai Lenny Atmosphere 40.5 — the signature shape of the Hawaiian waterman who helped develop it. Long, flowing, suited to big powerful turns and a relaxed surf style. The right board for surfers who ride longboards or mid-lengths in the water.
Carver CI Black Beauty 31.75 — Channel Islands collaboration. A shorter, more performance-oriented shape suited to high-performance shortboard surfing movement. Tight, responsive, for riders who want to train the upper-performance end of surfing.
Carver Resin 28.25 — one of Carver's shorter shapes, suited to younger riders, lighter riders or those who want a tight, manoeuvrable surf skate for technical riding in limited space.
Carver Triton 36 — mid-length shape, versatile, suits most adult riders across a range of styles. The shape we recommend most consistently as an all-rounder for riders who are not sure exactly what they are looking for.
