Free Snowboard Waxing & Care Clinic — Learn to Wax Your Own Board

Next Session

Free waxing & board-care clinic — 20/6/26
Twelve Board Store, 435A Bridge Road, Richmond. Free to attend — [book a spot / spots limited]. Bring your board; we’ll show you how to wax it and look after it so it rides better and lasts longer.

Most people never learn to wax their own board. They ride it dry all season, drop it in for a service when it’s really struggling, and never know the difference a fresh coat makes. This clinic fixes that. It’s a free, hands-on session where we take you through waxing and caring for your snowboard properly — so you can do it yourself, whenever it needs it, for the life of the board.

No charge, no catch. We’d rather you knew how to look after the gear you bought than have it sit in the garage going dry.

What you’ll learn

We run you through the whole process on the bench, start to finish:

  • Reading your base — how to tell when it’s actually due for wax, and why a chalky white base is costing you.
  • Hot waxing — picking the right wax, iron temperature, applying it evenly, and why hot wax beats a rub-on every time.
  • Scraping and structuring — the part most people get wrong, and the part that decides whether the wax actually does anything.
  • Edge basics — what to check, when an edge needs attention, and what you can safely do at home.
  • Storage — how to put the board away at season’s end so it’s ready to ride next year instead of needing work first.

You’ll walk out able to do it yourself. If you want to follow along again at home, our step-by-step guide to waxing your board covers the same process in writing.

Why bother learning to wax

Wax isn’t about speed for its own sake. A waxed base glides instead of dragging — less effort on the flats, easier turns, a board that works with you instead of against you. A dry base grabs, and that grab is what wears you out by mid-afternoon.

It’s also the cheapest protection going. The base is porous and designed to hold wax. Run it dry long enough and it oxidises, goes white and burns — and once it’s burnt, that’s permanent. Keeping wax in it is the buy-once-buy-right move: look after a good board and it rides well for years. Learning to do it yourself means you’ll actually keep on top of it instead of waiting until it’s bad. If you want to kit out your own bench, we break down the gear in our rundown on Demon tune kits.

How often it needs doing

Rough rule: every three to five days on snow — more in cold, dry, abrasive conditions, less when it’s warm and wet. The base tells you the truth: if it’s going chalky-white underfoot and through the middle, it’s overdue. Once you know how, it’s a twenty-minute job at home.

Don’t skip the last wax of the season

The most-missed wax of the year is the storage one. A thick coat over the base and edges before you pack the board away keeps moisture out, stops the edges rusting and the base drying over summer — so next season you’re riding, not repairing. We cover the full pack-down in our end-of-season board care guide, and we’ll show you how at the clinic.

If your board’s past saving

Sometimes a board’s had its day, or it was never the right size or shape for how you ride — and no amount of wax fixes that. A clinic visit is a good moment to work that out. Our complete snowboard buying guide covers choosing the right board, and the snowboard size guide for Australian riders gets you to the right length. Every board we sell includes free boot heat moulding, and we’re an authorised Australian dealer across every brand — so what you buy is backed properly.
