Evolve vs Onewheel — Which One Should You Buy?

This is the most common question we get in the electric section of the store. Someone has done enough research to narrow it down to two options and wants a straight answer. Here it is.

Evolve and Onewheel are not competing products — they are completely different experiences. The choice is not about which is better. It is about which one matches how you want to ride.

Evolve — The Better Commuter and Versatile Rider

Evolve is a skateboard with a motor. You stand sideways, you carve, you lean to turn. The GTR series uses belt drive motors — real torque, strong braking, capable of Melbourne hills without drama. The Bamboo deck absorbs road vibration. Street wheels for paths and roads, all-terrain wheels for anything rougher. One board that handles most of what Melbourne's riding network throws at it.

The Evolve GTR Bamboo is the board our staff commute on. It does the Capital City Trail, Bay Trail and Richmond to CBD without fuss. It goes on the lift with you in the morning and fits under a desk. Real range at commuting speeds — expect 25 to 35km depending on your weight and the terrain.

Learning curve: if you can skateboard or longboard, you'll be comfortable on an Evolve within minutes. If you have never stood sideways on a board, give it an afternoon. It is not hard.

Best for: commuters, riders who want a board that feels like skating, people who want street and all-terrain versatility from one board, anyone who values strong braking and torque on hills.

Onewheel — The Better Off-Road and Snowboard-Feel Option

The Onewheel is not a skateboard. One wheel. Self-balancing. You stand facing forward, you lean to go, you shift your weight to turn. It rides like a mix of snowboarding and surfing — the carve through turns is hip-driven and the response is immediate. Most people describe it as feeling more like a board sport than any other electric rideable.

The GT S-Series is the current flagship. More range than the standard GT, faster top speed, tunable modes through the app. It handles sealed paths, gravel, grass, light trails and beach access tracks equally well — the fat tyre just rolls over surfaces that would stop a standard skateboard wheel cold. Frosty rides his Onewheel to work along the Yarra Trail. Sealed path, gravel sections, short grass stretches — no changes, no problems.

Learning curve: it takes about an hour to get comfortable. The first ten minutes feel strange. By the end of the first session most riders are hooked. After a week it feels completely intuitive. Surfers and snowboarders tend to click faster than others because the weight transfer is familiar.

Best for: riders coming from snowboarding or surfing, anyone who wants genuine off-road capability, people who want the most unique and engaging riding experience in the category, riders who prioritise terrain versatility over commuter practicality.

The Direct Comparison

Commuting in the city: Evolve. Lower profile, easier to carry on public transport, better suited to consistent speeds on sealed paths.

Off-road and trail riding: Onewheel. The fat tyre handles terrain that stops an Evolve wheel cold.

Snowboarders and surfers: Onewheel. The movement pattern is immediately familiar and the carve feel is closer to what you know.

Pure skaters: Evolve. Standing sideways and carving is what skaters already do.

Riding with mates on regular skateboards: Evolve. You can keep up and ride the same spots.

Wanting to ride on beach paths, parks and light trails: Onewheel, or Evolve with all-terrain wheels.

Can You Buy Both?

Yes. And plenty of our customers do. They are different enough that they do not overlap much. The Evolve handles the Monday morning commute. The Onewheel comes out on Sunday when you want to actually ride rather than just get somewhere.

If you can only pick one: be honest about what your primary use is. Commuting and getting around — Evolve. Riding for the feeling of it — Onewheel.

Both are in store. We demo both. Come and try them before you decide.
