How Much Does an Electric Bike Cost in Australia?
E-bike pricing is confusing because the same words describe very different products. Two bikes both called a 750W fat tyre e-bike can be $1,800 and $4,300, and the difference is entirely in the parts you cannot see from a photograph.
Here is what things actually cost in Australia, and what the gap buys.

What does an electric bike cost?

What does the extra money actually buy?
Not top speed, which is where most people look. Three things, in order of how much they matter.
1. Battery cells. This is the big one. The battery is the most expensive component and the one that determines whether the bike is still good in four years. Quality packs use cells from established manufacturers with proper battery management. Cheap packs use unbranded cells with minimal protection, and they degrade fast, sometimes alarmingly. Ask what cells are in it. A brand that will not tell you is telling you something.
2. Brakes. You are on a bike that weighs perhaps 30kg, carrying you, at speed. Brakes are not a place to save money. Better bikes run better hydraulic systems with more stopping power and more consistent feel.
3. Motor and controller. Higher quality motors run cooler, last longer and deliver power more smoothly. Controllers manage that power more intelligently. Headline wattage tells you very little here, since it is usually peak rather than continuous.
Then everything else: frame welds and finish, wheel build quality, tyres, suspension, display and connectors. Real, but secondary to the three above.
Are cheap electric bikes worth it?
Occasionally, with clear eyes about what you are accepting. Usually not.
The savings on a very cheap e-bike come from exactly the three things listed above, plus the fourth that does not show up until something goes wrong: support and parts supply.
What that looks like in practice. The battery degrades faster than expected and a replacement is either unavailable or nearly the price of the bike. A brake or controller fails and no local workshop can source the part. The warranty exists on paper but is administered by an overseas seller. The bike becomes unrideable and unsellable at the same time.
We see these in the workshop, and the honest answer is often that fixing it costs more than it is worth. That is not snobbery about brands, it is what happens when parts do not exist.
A cheap e-bike is not a cheaper version of an expensive one. It is a disposable one. If the budget genuinely does not stretch, a certified entry bike from a brand with local support beats a high-spec unbranded one every time.

Realistically, $200 to $400 a year if you ride regularly, less for weekend use. Compared with running a car for the same trips, or a year of public transport fares, it remains very cheap transport.
The largest avoidable cost is a drivetrain replaced late. Motors chew chains far faster than legs do, and replacing a stretched chain early saves the cassette.
Battery replacement
The cost people do not plan for.
E-bike batteries last several hundred charge cycles, typically three to five years of normal use, and then hold noticeably less than they did. They rarely fail outright. Range just shrinks until it no longer covers your trip.
A replacement pack is a significant cost, often a meaningful fraction of the bike's original price, and it varies by capacity and brand. Two implications worth acting on at purchase:
- Cell quality at purchase is a long-term cost decision, not a spec-sheet detail. A pack that lasts five years instead of two halves this.
- Buy from somewhere that can still source a pack for your model in a few years. An orphaned bike with a dead battery has almost no value.

Budget a few hundred on top of the bike for the essentials. The lock is the one not to economise on, given what you are protecting.
Where to spend and where to save
Spend on the battery and brakes. They are the components that decide whether the bike is safe and whether it is still good in four years.
Spend on local support. Not a component, but it determines what happens when something goes wrong. A warranty you can walk into is worth real money.
Save on cosmetics. Colour, badging and styling cost nothing in performance.
Save on headline wattage. Peak numbers are marketing. Ask for continuous output.
Do not save on the lock. An e-bike is a target and a cable lock is not a deterrent.
