Frequently Asked Questions

The gap between your jacket collar and helmet is where cold and wind get in, and sealing it makes a bad day rideable. Pulled up over your face it also protects your cheeks and nose from windburn and spindrift. It is small, cheap and disproportionately useful.

A simple tube or neck gaiter is the versatile default: round the neck, up over the face, or under the helmet as a bonus layer. A shaped face mask or balaclava gives more coverage for genuinely cold, high-wind days. For most Australian riding, a good tube covers it.

Merino is the standout: warm, breathable and odour-resistant even worn against your face for days. Technical synthetics are light, stretchy and quick-drying. Avoid heavy cotton, which gets damp from your breath and stays cold and clammy.

Fabric choice mostly solves it. A breathable merino or technical tube moves moisture rather than trapping it, so it does not ice up like a dense cotton one. Pulling it just below your nose when you do not need full coverage also helps it stay dry.
