What makes a pant baggy, and why is it everywhere?

Volume and drape. A baggy snow pant is cut loose and full through the leg for a relaxed, high-volume silhouette. It has become the defining look of modern snowboarding, but beyond style there is real function: maximum freedom of movement, easy to layer thermals underneath, and no restriction when you crouch, strap in or land.

It is the park and freestyle default for exactly that reason, and it is more forgiving if you are between sizes.

How is baggy different from cargo, regular or skinny?

Worth getting right before you buy. A baggy pant is about loose volume everywhere. A cargo pant is defined by its utility pockets and usually sits relaxed but not always full-baggy. A skinny pant is the tailored, close-fitting opposite. Regular sits in the middle. If you want the modern loose look, baggy is it.

Does a baggy cut change how you should size?

Yes, and it trips people up. Baggy pants are designed to sit loose, so do not size up chasing extra room, or you end up with a waist that will not hold and a hem that drags. Buy your correct waist size and let the cut provide the volume. Size over the base layer you actually ride in, not over jeans in the shop.

What waterproof rating do you need?

Pants sit closer to the snow than anything else you wear — you sit on lifts, kneel to strap in, and if you ride park you are on the ground constantly. 10K is the minimum for regular Australian riding, and 15K to 20K for wet days or heavy park sessions. How should baggy pants sit over your boots?

The full leg is designed to sit over the boot, but check the hem. Too long and it drags and wears through on your board edges; a good baggy pant covers the boot without pooling on the ground. An inner boot gaiter keeps snow out regardless.
