What do skateboard rails do?

Rails serve two purposes. First, they help you slide: mounted along the underside edges of the deck, they give a smooth, consistent surface for boardslides and lipslides, more predictable than sliding on bare wood. Second, they protect the deck: they take the wear from slides and grabs that would otherwise chew up the graphic and the wood, extending the life of your board. They also make the board easier to grab for old school freestyle and ramp tricks.

Who uses rails?

Rails are most associated with old school, pool and ramp skating, where sliding and grabbing are core, and they are having a resurgence with the return of shaped decks. Modern technical street skaters mostly skate without them, since bare-wood slides and flip tricks are the focus. If you skate transition, ride an old school shape, or just like the look and slide feel, rails are a cheap, fun addition.

How do you fit rails?

Rails screw into the underside of the deck with the small screws supplied. You will drill pilot holes (or use existing ones on some decks) and mount them along each edge. It takes a few minutes with a screwdriver. If you want a hand, bring your deck into our Richmond store.
