Not essential. They are most useful for old school, pool and ramp skating where sliding and grabbing are core. Modern technical street skaters mostly skate without them. If you like the slide feel or ride a shaped deck, they are a cheap, fun addition.
They screw into the underside of the deck along each edge with the small screws supplied, using pilot holes. It takes a few minutes with a screwdriver, or bring your deck in and we will help.
