What waterproof rating do you need in Australia?

Shell or insulated?

The core decision. An insulated jacket has warmth built in — simpler, warm out of the box, good if you run cold or want one-and-done. A shell has no insulation, so you layer underneath to match the day, which suits Australia's swing from cold mornings to mild spring afternoons and breathes better for high-output riding.

Most experienced riders here lean shell-plus-layers for the versatility. Beginners and those who feel the cold often prefer an insulated jacket for the simplicity.

What fit should you choose?

Riding style, not fashion, should drive it. A relaxed, baggier cut gives freedom of movement, layers easily, looks right off the hill, and is more forgiving between sizes — it is the park and all-mountain default. A trimmer technical fit suits high-output and touring riders who layer deliberately and do not want fabric flapping at speed or snagging on a pack.

Whichever you choose, size it over the mid-layer you will actually ride in, not over a t-shirt in the shop. The hood also needs to clear a helmet.
