Getting your board to the mountain in one piece, and through an airport without damage or excess-baggage drama, starts with the right bag. A snowboard bag protects your board, edges and bindings in transit, keeps everything together, and the good ones double as your whole travel kit. Whether you are driving up to Hotham for the weekend or flying to Japan, this is gear worth getting right.
It comes down to how you travel, and the three types suit very different trips.
Sleeves are a padded bag for one board. Ideal for driving to the resort and protecting the board in the car, ute tray or roof box, and for storage through the off-season. Light, simple and affordable, but not built for airline travel.
Travel bags are the do-everything choice for flying. More padding, room for one or two boards plus boots, bindings and outerwear, and built to survive baggage handlers. Many riders pack all their snow gear into one, to consolidate luggage and protect everything in a single hit.
Roller bags are the premium travel option. Wheels and a pull handle make moving heavy, fully loaded gear through an airport genuinely easy, which you appreciate about two minutes into a long terminal.
What size bag should you buy?
Snowboard bags are sized by length in centimetres, and the bag should be a little longer than your board. Generally 5 to 10cm longer, so it fits comfortably with room for the bag's own padding. A 157cm board sits well in a 160 to 166cm bag.
If you ride more than one board, or want to share a bag with a partner, size up to a bag rated for multiple boards rather than squeezing two into one that is not built for it.
How do you pack for air travel?
A well-packed travel bag does two jobs: it protects the board and it consolidates your luggage. The trick experienced travellers use is to pad the board with your own outerwear, mid layers and soft gear. It cushions the board and bindings, and it means you check fewer bags.
Detach or loosen your bindings if you can, wrap the nose and tail because those are the most vulnerable points, and make sure the edges are not pressing directly against the zip.
Which brands do we carry?
Dakine, Burton, Jones and more. Brands with genuine snow heritage that build bags riders actually trust on real trips, from simple sleeves through to fully loaded roller bags.
Buying a board bag in Australia
Authorised Australian dealer across every brand, so everything is genuine and carries full manufacturer warranty. Free shipping on orders over $90, with same and next-day dispatch from our Richmond store in Melbourne.
We travel with this gear ourselves, and our long-running Mint Tours snow travel partnership means we know what packing for an overseas trip actually involves. Ask us what survives a Japan trip.
No. Sleeves are built for driving to the resort and for off-season storage, not for baggage handlers. For flying you want a travel bag with real padding, or a roller bag if you are moving a heavy load through terminals.
Detach or at least loosen them if you can. It reduces the pressure points inside the bag and lowers the chance of something being forced against the board in transit.
The nose and tail. Wrap both before packing, and check that your edges are not pressing directly against the zip, which is the other common failure point.
Yes, and it is what experienced travellers do. Padding the board with your own outerwear, mid layers and soft gear cushions the board and bindings while letting you check fewer bags overall.
A 160 to 166cm bag. As a rule, go 5 to 10cm longer than your board so it fits with room for the bag's own padding.
If you fly regularly or pack heavy, yes. A fully loaded board bag is awkward to carry any distance, and wheels plus a pull handle solve exactly that problem. For occasional trips a padded travel bag is plenty.
Fits perfect on my Fatboy Scrambler, comes with mounting screws. Very happy

Burton step on bindings
These were great to use. Forget about ratchets and spend more time going down hill rather than down on your bum tightening your bindings.
