What longboard deck shape do you need?

The shape follows the purpose:

• Cruiser / pintail — the classic surfy shape for carving and relaxed cruising.
• Drop-through — mounts the trucks through the deck for a lower ride height, easier pushing and more stability. Ideal for commuting and distance.
• Drop deck — the platform itself drops lower for a very stable, low centre of gravity, favoured for downhill and freeride.
• Dancer — long, wide platforms for walking the board and freestyle footwork.

Length and wheelbase matter too: longer is more stable and better for distance and dancing, shorter is more nimble for carving and tight spaces.

What does flex do on a longboard deck?

Flex is how much the deck bends under you. More flex gives a lively, springy, cushioned ride that soaks up bumps, great for cruising and carving. Stiffer decks are more stable and precise at speed, which is what you want for downhill. Flex is usually matched to rider weight too, so a heavier rider needs a stiffer deck for the same feel.
