What is skate wax and how do you use it?

Skate wax is a hard paraffin-based block you rub onto the surface you want to slide or grind, not onto your board. It fills the pores of rough concrete and reduces friction so your trucks grind and your board slides smoothly. Apply it to the ledge, kerb or rail, test the slide, and reapply as it wears off. A little goes a long way, and one block lasts a long time.

Why not just use candle wax?

You can, and plenty of skaters started that way, but purpose-made skate wax is harder and formulated to last longer and grip the surface better without going greasy. Candle wax wears off fast and can leave a slippery residue. A proper skate wax block is only a few dollars and does the job far better.

Where should you use skate wax?

On the surfaces you want to slide or grind: concrete ledges, kerbs, metal and concrete rails, and rough manual pads. A quick word on etiquette — wax can make a surface slippery for pedestrians and hard to un-wax, so be considerate about where you apply it, especially in shared public spaces. Skate spots and parks are fair game.
