What is MIPS and why does it matter?
MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It is a low-friction layer inside the helmet that lets the shell rotate a few millimetres relative to your head during an angled impact. Most real-world falls are not straight-on, they are angled, and that rotation is what transfers damaging rotational force to the brain. MIPS is designed to absorb some of that rotation before it reaches you.
It is not marketing. It is a genuine, independently tested safety technology, and it now features across most price points rather than only on premium helmets. Our full breakdown is in MIPS vs WaveCel explained, including how MIPS compares with the WaveCel system used in Anon helmets.
Is MIPS worth the extra cost?
If your budget stretches to it, yes, and it is the helmet upgrade we would prioritise over cosmetic features every time. The premium over a non-MIPS version of the same helmet is usually modest, and it buys you protection against exactly the kind of angled impact most falls produce. Spend the money here before you spend it on colours or vents.
How should a helmet fit?
Snug and level, with no pressure points and no movement. It should cover your forehead to just above your goggles and not slide when you shake your head. A helmet that moves cannot protect you properly, and MIPS does not change the fit rules. The helmet still has to fit your head correctly for the system to work as intended. Measure your head circumference just above the ears and match the brand's size chart.
Will it work with your goggles?
Helmet and goggles should meet with no gap across the forehead. Most modern MIPS helmets and goggles pair fine, but it is worth checking as a pair. If you are buying both, buy them together or ask us and we will confirm the combination sits right.
What if the MIPS model you want is out of stock?
This page only lists MIPS helmets we currently have on the shelf, so it thins out toward the end of the season. If it looks light, check all snowboard helmets for the full range, including Anon WaveCel models, or call the Richmond store on 03 9421 2293 and we will tell you what is landing next.
