What are ceramic bearings and are they worth it?

Ceramic bearings use ceramic balls (usually silicon nitride) instead of steel. The ceramic balls are harder, rounder, lighter and smoother than steel, which means less friction, less heat, and no rust. In practice they roll a touch faster, keep their speed longer, and last longer than steel bearings if looked after. Whether they are worth it depends on you: for most skaters a quality steel bearing like Bones Reds is plenty, but if you want the best and notice the difference, ceramics are a real upgrade.

Ceramic or steel bearings?

Steel bearings (Bones Reds, Swiss, Bronson) are the sensible choice for most skaters: fast, reliable and far cheaper. Ceramic bearings cost significantly more but give lower friction, run cooler on long fast rides, and resist rust, which matters if you skate in the wet or want maximum roll speed. If you are a beginner or a casual skater, steel is the smart buy. If you are chasing every bit of performance or want bearings that shrug off moisture, ceramics earn their price.

Do ceramic bearings still need maintenance?

Yes. Ceramic balls do not rust, but the steel races and the bearing as a whole still need to be kept clean and lubricated to perform and last. The upside is they tolerate neglect better than steel and bounce back from a clean well. Keep them dry, clean them when they slow, and they will outlast a steel set.
