Why does board size matter so much for kids?

A narrower deck is easier to control with smaller feet, which is why kids boards are sized down. The wrong size is one of the most common reasons kids struggle to progress — they end up fighting equipment that does not suit them rather than learning to skate. Deck width is the key measurement:

• Mini (6.5 to 7.0 inch) — ages 5 to 7, shoe size under 3.
• 7.0 to 7.5 inch — ages 7 to 10, shoe size 3 to 5. The most common kids range.
• 7.5 to 7.75 inch — ages 10 to 13, shoe size 5 to 7. A transitional size that also suits small adults.
• 7.75 inch and up — adult sizing. Most kids 12 and over are ready for a standard adult setup.

These are guides, not rules. A bigger kid skates a bigger board and a smaller, technical kid sometimes prefers narrower. Come in and we will match the right size in a few minutes.

Why not just buy a cheap board to start?

A department-store skateboard looks like a skateboard but does not ride like one: the deck is heavy and has no pop, the trucks wobble unpredictably, and the wheels are hard plastic that slides without warning. Kids who start on cheap boards often decide they do not like skating, when the real problem is they have never ridden a board that works. A quality kids complete from a real brand costs more but rides properly, so a kid learns faster, enjoys it more and does not outgrow it in two sessions. Buy once, buy right applies to kids gear as much as adults.

What safety gear does a kid need?

A helmet is non-negotiable for a kid learning to skate. Wrist guards are the second most important item, because the most common beginner injury is a wrist fracture from catching a fall.
