Where should you start?

If you are building a setup, the order that matters is boots first, then board, then bindings. Boots are the one thing that has to fit your foot, and they shape everything else. Get the boots right and the rest follows.

What counts as women's-specific, and does it matter?

It matters, and it is not marketing. Women's boards use flex patterns and sidecut geometry tuned for lighter riders, so they bend and respond properly instead of feeling stiff and dead. Women's boots are built on a narrower, lower-volume last with a heel box shaped to lock a narrower heel in. Women's bindings run narrower heel cups and lighter highbacks. Women's outerwear is cut for a shorter torso, narrower shoulders and a different hip-to-waist ratio.

The theme across all of it is that a men's item sized down keeps the wrong proportions and the wrong flex. It can be ridden, but it works against you rather than with you.

Do Australian conditions change what you should buy?

Yes, and most online advice misses it. Australian snow is wetter and heavier than the dry North American and Japanese powder most buying guides are written for. That pushes two things: do not go too soft on a board, because an overly soft board loses energy and feels dead in slush, and do not skimp on waterproofing, because 10K is a sensible floor and 15K or higher earns its place if you ride through rain or sit in the snow. We ride Falls Creek, Mt Buller and Thredbo, and we size and spec against those conditions rather than someone else's.
