No. An airbag pack is not gear that replaces beacon, probe and shovel. It is gear that works alongside them.
When deployed, the airbag inflates rapidly and increases the wearer's volume, using the avalanche's natural sorting mechanism to keep them near the surface of the debris. Airbag deployment meaningfully increases survival rates in avalanche burials.
The key considerations are canister type, pack volume for your intended use, and trigger handle positioning so the pack can be deployed reliably in gloves.
AST 1 training is strongly recommended before any independent backcountry travel.
