In 1974, brothers Peter, Stephen and Matt Hill started building their own decks and backyard ramps in Melbourne — a DIY obsession that would eventually become Hardcore Enterprises, then Globe International, one of the most recognised skateboard companies in the world. Hardcore: 50 Years of Skateboarding in Australia is the definitive account of that journey, tracing the Hill brothers from those first homemade boards through shopping centre demos, ramp riots, Easter tours, and stadium spectaculars, and mapping their impact on how skateboarding took root and grew in this country.
At 484 pages and over 800 images, this is less a coffee table book and more an archive — a record of the people, places, and moments that shaped Australian skate culture over five decades. Published by Thames & Hudson Australia, it's the kind of document the scene has never really had before: a proper telling of where it came from, by the people who were there for all of it.

Globe was born out of Hardcore Enterprises, the skateboard business the Hill brothers — Peter, Stephen and Matt — built from the ground up in Melbourne starting in 1974. What began with homemade decks and warehouse ramps grew into one of Australia's most successful action sports companies, expanding from skateboards into footwear, apparel, and surf brands, and eventually listing on the ASX. More than fifty years on, Globe remains family-run and Melbourne-based — still deeply connected to the skate culture it helped create.
