Electric skateboard pricing spans from a few hundred dollars to well over six thousand, and the specifications do not explain the gap. Two boards claiming similar range and speed can be $700 and $2,500 apart, and the difference is in the components you cannot photograph.

What does an electric skateboard cost?

Prices current as at August 2026. The commuter band is where most riders should be looking. Below it you are compromising on braking and range in ways you will feel weekly. Above it you are buying capability that only pays off on hills and rough terrain.

What does the extra money actually buy?

Not top speed. Almost nobody rides an electric board near its limit, and the numbers cluster closely anyway.

1. Battery cells. The most expensive component and the one that decides whether the board is still good in four years. Quality packs use cells from established manufacturers with proper battery management. Cheap packs use unbranded cells that degrade fast and sag badly under load, which is what causes the cutting-out-on-hills complaint. Ask what cells are in it.

2. Braking. Under-rated and genuinely a safety issue. Better boards brake harder and more consistently, particularly at the top and bottom of the charge range. On a board with no mechanical brake, this is not a comfort feature.

3. Motor and drivetrain. Belt drive gives the most torque and the strongest braking. Direct drive gets close with less maintenance. Hub motors are cheapest and give up torque and braking force. That is a genuine design choice, not just a price tier.

4. Support and parts. Not a component, but it decides what happens when something breaks. Belts, remotes, chargers and battery packs all need to be obtainable.

Why very cheap boards are a false economy

The saving on a very cheap electric board comes from the cells, the braking and the support. All three matter more here than on almost anything else you can buy, because you are standing on it at speed with no mechanical brake.

What we see in the workshop: a battery that sags under load and cuts out on hills, braking that fades unpredictably, a remote that drops connection, and no parts available for any of it. The board becomes unrideable and unsellable at the same moment.

An orphaned board with a dead battery has almost no value. If budget is tight, an ex-demo board from a real brand beats a new unbranded one every time.

Ex-demo and used

Ex-demo from a dealer is the best value in this category, and it is worth actively looking for.

Demo boards are maintained, checked and ridden by people who know them. You keep support and warranty position, parts remain available, and pricing typically sits well below new. Boards that were $1,100 to $1,500 new commonly land around $600 to $900 ex-demo.

A private used board is a different proposition. The risk is entirely the battery, and it is invisible. A pack that has been run flat and left in a shed looks identical to one that has been treated properly. Packs are the most expensive component and often the hardest to source.

If you are buying privately: ask how it has been charged and stored, ask roughly how many cycles it has done, ride it up a hill at part charge, and factor a possible battery replacement into your offer.

Realistically $150 to $300 a year riding regularly. Belt drive owners spend more, which is the trade-off for the torque and braking. Hub and direct drive owners skip that line entirely.

Battery replacement

The cost nobody plans for, and the one that most affects whether a board is worth keeping.

Packs last several hundred charge cycles, typically a few years of regular use, then hold noticeably less. They rarely fail outright. Range shrinks, and sag under load gets worse, until the board cuts out on hills it used to climb.

A replacement pack is a significant cost relative to the board, sometimes a large fraction of what you paid. Two things follow:

  • Cell quality at purchase is a long-term cost decision. A pack lasting five years instead of two halves this.
  • Buy where a pack can still be sourced for your board in a few years.
