Electric Skateboard Problems and How to Fix Them
Most electric skateboard faults come down to four things: the battery, a connector, the remote, or belt tension. Very few are the motor.
Work through the free checks before assuming the worst, because a board that feels dead is usually a board that needs charging properly or a remote that needs re-pairing.
Start here, in this order
- Charge both the board and the remote fully. Flat remotes cause faults that look like board faults.
- Re-pair the remote if there is any connection oddity.
- Check the charge port for grit, moisture or damage.
- Belt drive? Check belt tension before anything else mechanical.
- Lift the wheels and spin them by hand with the power off to isolate noise.
- Then start considering parts.
E-skate problems by symptom

It will not turn on
Charge it before anything else. This is not the obvious advice it sounds like. A lithium pack that has been run flat and left will often not respond to the power button at all, because the management system has shut it down protectively. Put it on the charger and give it time before concluding the board is dead.
Check the charge port. Ports on e-skates sit close to the ground and collect grit and moisture. Look for corrosion or a bent pin.
Watch the charger indicator. If it never changes state when connected, the problem is the charger or the port rather than the board.
If it charges normally and still will not power up, that is a switch or an internal connector, and it is a workshop job because it means opening the enclosure.
Remote problems
The remote causes more apparent board faults than anything else, and it is the easiest thing to rule out.
Charge the remote separately. It has its own battery and it is easy to forget. A remote low on charge will connect and then drop under load, which feels exactly like a board fault.
Re-pair it. Every brand has its own sequence, usually holding a button while powering on. Check your manual or the brand's help videos.
Interference is real. Tram lines, dense wifi, large crowds and some industrial areas all cause dropouts. The tell is location: if it drops in the same physical spot every time, that is interference rather than a fault, and there is nothing wrong with your board.
Keep the receiver line of sight where you can. Holding the remote behind your back or in a pocket puts your body between it and the board, which is a surprisingly common cause of dropouts.
A dropout at speed is genuinely dangerous. If yours is dropping unpredictably rather than in a known spot, stop riding it until it is sorted.
Belt drive: tension and wear
If you ride a belt drive board, this is the maintenance item that matters most and the one most riders never check.
Correct tension: firm enough that the belt does not skip under hard acceleration, loose enough that it deflects slightly when you press it. Both extremes cause problems.
- Too loose: the belt skips under load, slaps audibly, and wears the teeth off quickly.
- Too tight: constant drag, which costs range noticeably, plus accelerated wear on motor and wheel bearings.
Inspect the belts for cracks between teeth, missing teeth, fraying edges or shiny glazed patches. Belts are consumables and replacing one before it fails is far better than being stranded.
Carry a spare if you ride any distance from home. A snapped belt on a belt drive board means walking.
Hub and direct drive boards do not have this maintenance item at all, which is one of their genuine advantages.
Range has dropped
Before assuming the battery, rule these out:
- Cold. Lithium delivers less when cold. Winter range is genuinely lower and returns.
- Speed mode. Riding in the highest mode uses far more than a moderate one.
- Hills, wind, rider weight and start-stop riding. All significant, all often forgotten when comparing to a memory of an early ride.
- Belt tension. Over-tensioned belts drag constantly and cost real range.
- Wheel wear and tyre pressure on pneumatic all-terrain setups.
The test: a drop that appears on every ride, in warm weather, at full charge, in the same mode, points at the pack. A drop that varies with conditions does not.
Remember that stated range figures are optimistic to begin with. Real world is typically around 60 to 70 percent of the claim, so a board that never matched its number was never going to.
Braking feels different
Two things surprise new riders and neither is a fault.
Weak braking on a full battery. Electric skateboards brake by feeding energy back into the pack. When the pack is full there is nowhere for that energy to go, so braking is noticeably reduced. It is most obvious rolling down a hill straight after charging. Ride a little to make room, and be aware of it on that first descent.
Weak braking at very low charge. The other end of the same effect. Keep enough charge in reserve to stop properly.
If braking is inconsistent at mid charge, that is worth investigating.
Mechanical noises and handling
Plenty of what feels electrical is ordinary board mechanics.
Diagnose with the power off. Lift the wheels, spin each by hand and listen. A noise present without power is mechanical.
- Rhythmic slap: belt tension or wear.
- Grinding that changes with wheel speed: a bearing.
- Whine only under power: motor or drivetrain.
- Pulling to one side: uneven truck tension, or unevenly worn wheels.
- Vague, unstable feel: worn bushings, same as any skateboard.
Electric boards are heavier and carry more speed, so bushings and bearings work harder than they would on a push board.
E-skate troubleshooting FAQ
Why won't my electric skateboard turn on?
Charge it fully first, since a deeply discharged pack often will not respond to the power button. Check the charge port for damage and make sure the charger indicator changes when connected. If it charges but still will not power up, it is usually a switch or connector.
Why does my electric skateboard remote keep disconnecting?
Usually a flat remote battery or radio interference. Charge the remote, then re-pair it following your board's sequence. Dropouts near tram lines, large crowds and dense wifi are common. If it drops in the same physical spot every time, that is interference rather than a fault.
Why has my electric skateboard lost range?
Cold weather, rider weight, hills, wind and riding in the highest speed mode all reduce range considerably. If it has dropped permanently across every ride in warm conditions, the cells have aged. Belt drive boards also lose range if the belts are over-tensioned.
Why is my electric skateboard making a noise?
On belt drive boards a rhythmic slapping usually means belt tension is wrong or a belt is worn. A grinding or whining under power points to a bearing or the motor. Lift the wheels and spin them by hand with the power off to separate mechanical noise from motor noise.
Why does my electric skateboard cut out while riding?
Most often the battery management system protecting low cells under load, which feels like a sudden loss of power on hills. It can also be a loose connector shaken by vibration, or the remote losing connection. Check it happens at full charge before assuming a fault.
How tight should electric skateboard belts be?
Tight enough not to skip under acceleration, loose enough to deflect slightly when pressed. Over-tensioned belts drag, cost range and wear bearings. Under-tensioned belts skip and slap. Both are common and both are quick to correct.
When to stop riding and bring it in
Stop and bring it to us if the remote drops out unpredictably rather than in a known spot, if the board cuts out at full charge, if the battery is hot, swollen or smells chemical, if the board has been submerged, or if braking is inconsistent.
