E-Bike Battery Care: Charging, Storage and Lifespan
The battery is the most expensive part of an e-bike and the one most affected by habits. Nothing here is difficult, and most of it is about avoiding two extremes: leaving a pack sitting full, and leaving one sitting empty.

- Charge to about 80 percent for daily riding. Full when you need the range.
- Never leave it flat. This is the one that actually kills batteries.
- Store at 40 to 60 percent if it is going to sit for weeks, indoors and cool.

How to charge properly

A full charge from empty typically takes three to six hours depending on pack size. The last stretch is deliberately slow, because the charger tapers the current as the pack fills. That is protective, not a fault.
How full should you charge it?
This is where the most life is gained or lost, and the honest answer is more nuanced than always charging it to full.
Lithium cells age fastest at the extremes. Sitting at 100 percent puts them under sustained stress, and sitting near empty is worse. The middle of the range is where they are happiest.
- Daily short trips: charging to around 80 percent is meaningfully gentler and you will never notice the missing range.
- Long ride planned: charge to 100 percent, and ideally ride soon after rather than leaving it full for days.
- Any time: avoid running it to zero. Recharge from 20 to 30 percent rather than emptying it.
The habit that actually causes damage is running a pack completely flat and then leaving it. A drained battery continues to self-discharge, and if it drops far enough the management system shuts it down protectively. Many chargers cannot wake it from that state, and it becomes a workshop job. If you are putting the bike away, charge it first.
Storing a battery
If the bike is going to sit for more than a few weeks, over winter or while you are away, this matters.
- Charge to roughly 40 to 60 percent. Not full, not empty. This is the state cells are most stable at.
- Take it off the bike and bring it inside. A cool, dry, room-temperature spot. Not a garage that swings from 5 to 40 degrees, and not a shed.
- Check it every couple of months and top back up to the middle if it has drifted down.
- Do not store it on the charger. Holding at full for months is the worst case for ageing.
A battery stored properly over a winter will be close to where you left it. A battery stored flat in a shed may not come back at all.
Temperature and range
Cold reduces range, temporarily. The chemistry simply delivers less when cold. A Melbourne winter morning can visibly cost you range, and it returns as the day and the pack warm up. That is normal and not a fault.
What helps:
- Store the battery indoors overnight rather than on a bike in a cold garage, then fit it before you leave.
- Let a cold pack warm to room temperature before charging. Lithium packs refuse to charge below a certain temperature by design, and forcing it is worse than waiting.
- Expect shorter winter range and plan the trip around it rather than assuming something is wrong.
Heat is the other extreme. Do not leave a battery in a car in an Australian summer, or in direct sun. Sustained heat ages cells faster than anything else you can do to them.
How long will it last, and when do you replace it?
E-bike batteries are rated in charge cycles rather than years. A cycle is one full charge worth of energy, so two half charges count as one.
Most packs deliver several hundred cycles before capacity drops noticeably. For a typical rider that lands somewhere around three to five years, longer if you ride less or treat it well, shorter if you deep-cycle it daily.
They do not fail suddenly. Capacity fades gradually, so the bike behaves normally but gets you less far. Most people replace a pack not because it stopped working but because the remaining range no longer covers their commute.
Signs a pack is near the end: range down substantially at full charge on a warm day with correct tyre pressure, cutting out under load on hills at full charge, or charging much faster than it used to, which means it is holding less.
Replacement batteries are a real cost, so factor it in when comparing bikes. It is also a reason to buy from somewhere that will still be able to source one for your model in a few years.
Battery safety
Modern e-bike batteries from established brands are well engineered and the risks are manageable. The sensible precautions:
- Use the supplied charger. Mismatched chargers are the single biggest avoidable risk.
- Do not charge a visibly damaged, swollen or dropped pack. Bring it in instead.
- Do not charge one that has been submerged until it has been checked.
- Stop using it immediately if it smells chemical, runs hot, or has a deformed case.
- Do not open the pack. There is nothing user-serviceable and the cells hold real energy.
- Do not put a battery in household waste. Bring it to us or a battery recycling point.
If a pack is behaving oddly, stop riding it and get it looked at rather than waiting to see.
