A Onewheel has one tyre carrying your entire weight, doing all the steering, all the grip and all the shock absorption. That makes tyre pressure the single most influential setting on the board, and the one most riders never touch.

What pressure should you run?

Start with the range for your model. It is in the manual and it differs between boards, so a number from a forum post about a different model is not useful. Stay inside that range.

Within it, there is no single correct number. The right pressure depends on your weight, your terrain and what you want the board to feel like. Two riders on identical boards can reasonably run different pressures.

Rider weight is the main input. Heavier riders compress the tyre more, so they generally sit in the upper part of the range. Lighter riders can run lower and get more grip without the tyre squirming.

Check it with a proper gauge. A Onewheel tyre feels firm to a thumb well below where you want it, and because there is only one tyre you have nothing to compare it to. It drifts down without being noticed, which is why so many riders are running lower than they think.

If you want the board to feel more like snowboarding, go lower in the range. Most riders who describe a Onewheel as surfy are running toward the bottom of it.

If you want maximum range, go higher. The difference is real and it is free.

Change pressure in small increments and ride the same route each time. The effect is easy to feel once you are looking for it.

Tyre wear and replacement

One tyre doing all the work wears faster than people expect, and it wears unevenly depending on how you ride.

  • Riders who carve hard wear the shoulders.
  • Riders who go in straight lines wear a flat strip down the centre, which makes the board feel reluctant to initiate a turn.
  • A squared-off centre is the usual sign it is time, even if there is tread left on the shoulders.

Tyre choice also changes the ride considerably. Different profiles give more or less grip and a different carve character. It is one of the more meaningful upgrades available, and worth a conversation rather than a guess.

Changing a Onewheel tyre is not a casual job. It involves separating the hub motor assembly, and doing it badly risks the motor and the wiring. Unless you know what you are doing, this one is worth bringing to us.

Avoiding a nosedive

This is the failure mode worth understanding properly, because it is the one that hurts.

A Onewheel holds you up by driving the wheel to keep the board level. If you ask for more than the motor can deliver, it cannot hold the nose up any more and the front drops. It is not a fault, it is physics at the edge of what the board can do.

What pushes a board there:

  • Hard acceleration, especially from a standstill
  • Steep climbs where the motor is already working
  • Low battery. Available power drops as charge drops
  • Heavier riders at the same speeds and gradients
  • Cold batteries, which deliver less

How to stay away from it: respect the pushback the board gives you, which is the nose lifting to tell you to slow down. Do not ride hard at low battery. Accelerate progressively rather than stamping on it. And wear wrist guards and a helmet, because the one time it happens you will be glad.

Ride within the board and it is a non-issue. Push a nearly flat board up a hill and it is not.

Rails, fenders and footpads

Rail guards. The rails are what you set the board down on, every single time. They scuff immediately and permanently. Guards are inexpensive and preserve both the look and the resale value. This is the first accessory most riders should buy.

Fender. Keeps spray and grit off your back leg in the wet. Genuinely useful on wet roads. Less useful off-road, where mud can pack between the fender and tyre, so plenty of riders run one seasonally and remove it for trails.

Footpads. The sensor pad is what tells the board you are on it. Keep it clean and check it responds reliably. An intermittent footpad is a real safety issue rather than an annoyance, so if the board is not consistently recognising your foot, stop riding and get it looked at.

Bumpers. Take the impact when you set the board down or drop it. Cheap and replaceable, which is the point.

A second charger. One at home, one wherever you ride from. Small quality of life change that most riders make eventually.

Charging habits

Same rules as any lithium pack, and they matter more here because the battery is doing the work of keeping you upright.

  • Do not store it flat. The single worst habit. Charge before putting it away.
  • Store at partial charge if it is sitting for weeks, somewhere cool and indoors.
  • Use the supplied charger.
  • Let it cool after a hard ride before charging.
  • Avoid riding hard at low charge. On a Onewheel this is a control issue, not just a range one.

Riding in the wet

Onewheels handle light moisture better than people fear, but they are not a wet weather vehicle and treating one as such is expensive.

  • Water and electronics. Avoid puddles, never submerge it, and dry it thoroughly afterwards including around the footpad and charge port.
  • Traction drops considerably. One tyre, wet surface, and all your steering going through it.
  • Painted lines, tram tracks and metal plates become genuinely hazardous in Melbourne wet.
  • Grit and salt get everywhere. Wipe it down rather than leaving it.

Caught out is fine. Making a habit of it is not.
