Electric Bike Maintenance Guide
An e-bike is a bicycle carrying an extra twenty-odd kilos and a motor that puts torque through everything. That does not make maintenance harder, but it does make it matter more, because the parts that wear are working considerably harder than they would on a pushbike.
Most of what follows takes minutes and needs no tools beyond a pump and a multi-tool.

- Tyre pressure weekly. The highest-value two minutes in e-bike ownership.
- Chain clean and lube monthly, more if you ride in the wet.
- Check brake pads monthly. They wear faster than you expect.
- Bolt check monthly. Vibration plus weight works fasteners loose.

Tyre pressure: the one that matters most
If you only do one thing on this page, do this one. Fat tyre pressure affects range, grip, comfort, puncture resistance and how the bike handles, and fat tyres lose pressure gradually enough that people ride for months without noticing.
Check the sidewall. Every tyre has a printed pressure range. Stay inside it. There is no single correct number, because the right pressure depends on where you are riding.
- Lower in the range: more grip and comfort on sand, gravel, grass and rough paths. More rolling resistance, so less range.
- Higher in the range: less rolling resistance, better range and a faster feel on sealed roads. Harsher, and less grip on loose ground.
- Heavier riders and loaded bikes want the upper part of the range.
Too low is the common mistake, and it causes pinch punctures where the tube gets squeezed between rim and obstacle. It also quietly costs a lot of range, which people then blame on the battery.
Check weekly with a proper gauge rather than by squeezing. A fat tyre feels firm to a thumb at pressures that are far too low.
Brakes
E-bike brakes work considerably harder than pushbike brakes. More mass, more speed, more often. Pads wear faster and it is worth staying ahead of it.
- Check pad thickness monthly. Replace before the friction material is gone, not after. Riding on worn pads scores the rotor, which turns a cheap job into an expensive one.
- Listen for scraping. A rhythmic scrape once per wheel rotation is usually a rotor rubbing or slightly bent.
- Squealing is usually contamination. Clean the rotor thoroughly. Once pads are contaminated with oil or lubricant they generally need replacing.
- Spongy lever feel on hydraulic brakes means air in the system. That is a workshop bleed, not a home job for most people.
- Keep lubricant away from rotors. When you lube the chain, cover the rotor or wipe carefully. This is the single most common way brakes get contaminated.
Brakes are the system where it is worth being early rather than clever. They are what stops a heavy bike.
Chain and drivetrain
This is where e-bikes differ most from pushbikes, and where people are most often surprised by a bill.
A motor puts far more torque through the chain and cassette than legs alone. Drivetrains that would last years on a pushbike wear out in a fraction of the time. That is normal and expected, not a defect.
Clean and lubricate monthly, and after any wet ride. Wipe the chain with a rag, apply lubricant to each link, then wipe the excess off. Excess lubricant collects grit and makes wear worse rather than better.
Check chain stretch every few months. Chains elongate as they wear, and a stretched chain chews into the cassette teeth. Replacing a chain early is cheap. Replacing a chain and cassette together because you left it is not. A chain checker tool costs very little and takes seconds.
Symptoms of a worn drivetrain: chain slipping under power, especially when you accelerate hard from a standstill, noisy shifting, or gears that jump on their own.
Bolts, wheels and mounts
Weight plus vibration plus torque works fasteners loose faster than on a pushbike.
- Monthly bolt check. Stem, handlebars, seat clamp, rack mounts, motor and battery mounting bolts. Snug, not overtightened.
- Spoke tension. Squeeze pairs of spokes on each wheel. If one pair feels noticeably looser, get the wheel trued before it goes further out.
- Battery mount. Any play here causes intermittent cut-outs over bumps, which people usually misdiagnose as an electrical fault.
- Torque matters. Overtightening damages alloy components and carbon parts. If your bike has torque specs printed near a bolt, respect them.
How to clean an e-bike
Never pressure wash it. This is the mistake that causes real damage. High pressure water forces past seals into the motor, controller, connectors, bearings and display, and the damage often shows up weeks later as an intermittent fault nobody connects to the wash.
The right way:
- Remove the battery and keep it away from water.
- Cover or avoid the display, charge port and any exposed connectors.
- Use a bucket, sponge and mild soap. A gentle hose at most, never a jet.
- Clean the drivetrain separately with a brush and degreaser, keeping it off the rotors.
- Dry the contacts before refitting the battery.
- Re-lubricate the chain afterwards, because washing strips it.
Riding in salt air near the bay makes rinsing more important, not less, but the same rules apply.
What a workshop service covers
Some things genuinely need a workshop, and on an e-bike the list is longer than for a pushbike.
- Hydraulic brake bleeding and rotor truing
- Wheel truing and spoke tension, which matters more on heavy bikes
- Drivetrain measurement and replacement
- Battery health testing, which needs equipment rather than guesswork
- Controller and firmware checks, and diagnosing error codes properly
- Bearing inspection in the motor and headset
Every six to twelve months is the right interval. Six if you commute daily or ride in the wet, twelve if the bike gets weekend use.
Leave motor internals, controller wiring and battery packs alone. Those need specific equipment and carry genuine risk.
