What is a splitboard and how does it work?

A splitboard is a snowboard that splits down the middle into two ski-like halves. For the climb, you separate it, attach skins to the bases for grip, and skin uphill like a touring skier. At the top you clip the halves back together into a solid board and ride down. It is how snowboarders access backcountry terrain without a lift or a long boot-pack.

What else do you need beyond the board?

A splitboard is a system, not just a board. You need splitboard-specific bindings that work in both ski and ride modes, climbing skins cut to your board, and touring poles. Beyond the setup, backcountry travel needs avalanche safety gear — a beacon, shovel and probe — and the training to use them. We can spec the whole system and talk you through what is essential.

Is splitboarding right for you?

It is for riders who want terrain and solitude that lifts cannot reach, and who are willing to earn it. It demands fitness, avalanche awareness and a bigger up-front spend than a resort setup. If you are drawn to the backcountry, it is deeply rewarding. If you mostly ride resort, it is a specialist purchase to grow into rather than start with.

Similar principles to a solid board — height, weight, boot size and the terrain you will ride — but with more weighting toward float and stability for variable backcountry snow.
