Zero and the Misfits is one of those collaborations that shouldn't need explaining. Jamie Thomas built Zero in 1996 on skulls, dark imagery and a hardcore aesthetic that ran directly counter to whatever was fashionable at the time — and the Misfits invented horror punk two decades earlier doing exactly the same thing. "Horror Business" was the band's third single, put out in June 1979 on Glenn Danzig's own Plan 9 label. Forty-something years later it's on the bottom of a skateboard, and it glows in the dark.

That's not a gimmick detail either — the graphic charges under light and glows once you're in a dim carpark or a lit-up skatepark at night, which is exactly where a board like this belongs. It'll fade as the board wears, but that's true of every graphic, and this one at least earns its keep before it goes.

The shape is a twin tail — a symmetrical nose and tail rather than the usual longer-nose popsicle. That means the board feels the same whichever way you're pushing, which suits switch and nollie skating and makes it far more forgiving when you land back on a board pointing the wrong way. What width is right for me?

As a general guide: 7.5"–7.875" suits smaller riders or those focused on technical street skating. 8.0"–8.25" is the most popular all-round street and park size. 8.25"–8.5" suits riders who prefer a slightly bigger platform for stability. 8.5" and above works well for transition, bowls, and larger riders. A: A twin tail has a nose and tail that are the same length and shape, rather than the slightly longer nose you get on a standard popsicle. In practice the board feels identical whichever direction you're riding, which is a real advantage for switch and nollie tricks and means you don't have to think about which end is which when you land. Riders who skate a lot of switch tend to love them. If you've only ridden standard popsicles, expect a session or two of adjustment.

A: The graphic charges under light — sunlight or a bright indoor light — and glows for a period afterwards in the dark, fading gradually. It recharges every time it's exposed to light again, so it doesn't "run out." What does wear is the graphic itself: like any bottom graphic, it'll scuff and chip once you start grinding and sliding the board.
