Australia has a handful of genuine specialist snowboard retailers and a much larger number of general sporting goods stores and online-only operations that sell snowboards alongside football boots and tennis rackets. The difference matters more than most first-time buyers realise.
Here is how to think about where to buy your snowboard gear in Australia — and what separates a purchase you will be happy with from one you will have questions about later.
Authorised Australian Dealer vs Grey Market
An authorised Australian dealer has a direct relationship with the brand — they buy stock through official channels, carry genuine Australian warranty, and have brand support for warranty claims and product issues. A grey market retailer imports stock from overseas markets, often at lower prices, with no Australian warranty and no brand support if something goes wrong.
For snowboards this matters less than for boots and bindings — a board is relatively simple and warranty claims are less common. For boots it matters significantly. If your boot has a defect or a liner issue, an authorised dealer can manage that claim with the brand directly. A grey market retailer cannot.
At Twelve Board Store we are an authorised Australian dealer for every brand we stock — Burton, Jones, YES., Lib Tech, K2, Salomon, Ride, DC, ThirtyTwo, Nidecker, Nitro, L1, Yuki Threads and more. Full Australian warranty on everything.
Online vs In-Store — The Boot Question
Buying a snowboard online is reasonable if you know what you want and have done the research. Boards are relatively forgiving to buy online — the key specs (width, length, flex, camber profile) are all objectively measurable and a board that is right on paper is usually right in practice.
Buying snowboard boots online without being fitted is a gamble. Snowboard boot sizing varies between brands by up to a full size. Fit characteristics — width, heel volume, arch height — vary significantly between brands and affect how the boot performs. A boot that is the right size in the wrong brand for your foot shape will cause problems for the entire season.
If you are buying boots online for the first time: call the retailer before you order. A five-minute conversation about your foot shape and any previous boot issues will get you significantly closer to the right call. We take these calls every day — call us on 03 9421 2293 before ordering if you are unsure.
If you are in Melbourne: come in for a proper fitting. We heat mould every boot purchase free. The difference a properly fitted, heat moulded boot makes to how you ride is not marginal — it is the difference between enjoying the mountain and suffering through it.
What to Look For in a Snowboard Retailer
Staff who actually snowboard. This sounds obvious but it is not universal. A staff member who rides Australian resorts has firsthand knowledge of what works in Victorian and NSW conditions — wet snow, variable temperatures, firm morning groomers. That knowledge is the difference between a recommendation that suits your situation and one that was lifted from a northern hemisphere buying guide.
In-house workshop capability. Does the shop have a workshop? Can they wax and tune your board before you leave for the mountain? Can they heat mould your boots? Can they handle warranty assessments without sending gear interstate? These services are what separate a specialist from a shop that takes your money and wishes you luck.
Range depth. A retailer who stocks one or two brands at the entry level does not have enough range to match you to the right gear. You want a retailer stocking the full range of multiple brands across all price points — so the recommendation is based on what is right for you, not what they happen to have.
Price match policy. You should not pay more than the best legitimate Australian price for any product. A retailer confident in their service should be prepared to match any authorised Australian dealer price. We do this — bring us a lower price from a legitimate Australian retailer and we will match it.
Free Shipping Australia-Wide
We ship free Australia-wide on orders over $90 with same or next day dispatch on in-stock items. Most of our snowboard range is held in our Richmond warehouse and goes out fast. If you are outside Melbourne and cannot get in store, we are still the right call — the boot fitting conversation happens on the phone, and we include detailed fit guides with every boot purchase.
