Australia has more snowboarding on offer than most people realise. Six major resorts across Victoria and New South Wales, each with a different character, different terrain, and different strengths depending on what kind of rider you are and what kind of trip you want.

Victoria
Mt Buller — Best for Melbourne day trippers and groups
Distance from Melbourne: 3 hours. The closest major resort to Melbourne and the most accessible for a day trip. 300 hectares, 81 runs, 19 lifts — the largest lift network in Victoria. Terrain skews intermediate, with genuine advanced terrain on the Summit and South Face. The best terrain parks in Victoria. Ideal for mixed-ability groups because everyone finds their level without fighting for the same runs.
The village is fully on-snow — accommodation, restaurants, bars, all within walking distance of the lifts. Best for: first trips, weekend proximity sessions, groups with different ability levels, park riders.
Falls Creek — Best all-round Victorian resort
Distance from Melbourne: 4 hours. 450 hectares across a fully on-snow village — the best snow reliability in Victoria and the widest variety of terrain for all levels. Summit and Ruined Castle for advanced riders, Wombats Ramble for one of the best intermediate cruisers in the country, a consistently well-maintained park. Falls holds snow better than Buller in marginal conditions.
Best for: any rider making one annual trip who wants the best overall Victorian experience. The pick for most people most of the time.
Mt Hotham — Best Victorian terrain for experienced riders
Distance from Melbourne: 4 hours. The most serious resort in Victoria. The village sits at the top rather than the base. Big D, Orchard and the Extreme Skiing Zone are the best steep terrain in the state. Less crowded than Buller on weekends.
Best for: intermediate to advanced riders, experienced groups, anyone who has outgrown Buller. Less ideal for beginners or first-timers.
Mt Baw Baw — Best entry-level Victorian resort
Distance from Melbourne: 2 hours. The closest snow to Melbourne and the smallest of the Victorian resorts. Well-suited to complete beginners and families with young kids. Lift passes are significantly cheaper than the major resorts.
New South Wales
Perisher — Biggest resort in the Southern Hemisphere
Distance from Sydney: 6 hours. The largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere — over 3,000 acres across four interconnected base areas. More terrain variety than any other Australian resort, with extensive terrain parks and the best half-pipe in the country.
Best for: riders who want the biggest resort experience in Australia, terrain park and freestyle riders, anyone making a dedicated snowboard trip of 3 or more days.

Thredbo — Best NSW resort for snowboarders
Distance from Sydney: 6 hours. The longest runs in Australia (Supertrail at 5.9km), genuine vertical drop of 672m, and a terrain park that draws serious freestyle riders. The village has more character than Perisher for multi-day stays.
Best for: intermediate to advanced riders who want the longest runs and best vertical in Australia.
