Why Helmet Fit Matters

A helmet that doesn't fit right doesn't actually protect you the way it's supposed to — too loose and it shifts or rides up on impact, too tight and you'll take it off before you've even dropped in. Getting the size right the first time means one less thing to think about when you're skating, and one less reason to leave it at home.

Certification Standards Explained

You'll see a few certification labels across these brands — they tell you what kind of impact the helmet is built and tested for.

ASTM Skate Certified

Tested to the ASTM F1492 standard, built for the lower-speed, multi-impact nature of skating and scootering — a helmet that can take repeated smaller hits over a session, not just one big one.

CPSC Bike Certified

Tested to the U.S. CPSC bicycle standard, built around single higher-speed impacts.

Dual Certified

Meets both standards in one shell — the most common choice if you split your time between skating and riding.

MIPS

Multi-directional Impact Protection System — a low-friction layer inside the shell that lets your head rotate slightly on impact, reducing the rotational force that reaches your brain. Doesn't change how the helmet is sized, just adds a layer of protection.

Fit & Sizing

All the helmets below are sized by head circumference — measure with a soft tape around your head about an inch above your eyebrows, level all the way round. But don't assume one brand means one chart: ProTec alone runs three different charts across its Classic, Low Pro, and JR Classic Certified helmets, and Triple 8 splits across three shells too (Sweatsaver-style, Gotham/bike-style, and youth). Match your product to its own chart below rather than a different model from the same brand.
