Most experienced backcountry riders run a medium to stiff flex boot. Enough stiffness for powerful, precise edge engagement on steep terrain, and enough flexibility for the dynamic movements of touring: the lateral flexibility required when skinning and the ankle articulation that matters on long uphill traverses.

A soft park boot is not the right tool for serious backcountry riding. Backcountry boots sit at the stiffer end of the spectrum because they need to deliver decisive edge control on descents through variable, often wind affected terrain.
